BUT how on earth do I stop him pulling slightly off the breast leaving just the nipple in his mouth??

He opens his mouth nice and wide, gets a nice big mouthful of breast clamps down hard (dreading when he gets teeth ), sucks happily for about 5 minutes or so and then pulls back slightly leaving just nipple in his mouth and sucks like that.

Right nipple already getting very sore and he LOVES his milk no problems like I had with DS2 (who was on bottles by day 5 but I'd already 'given up' by this stage) but I'd like to figure out how to sort it now (if possible).

DOn't let him just suck the nipple. It will become very painful and he's not milking the breast properly like that. As domesticgrumpess says, break the suction and latch him on again.

Try the biological nurturing positions:

oh yes - don't let him keep doing this - I learnt the hard way with cracked nips - ouch. be very strict on a good latch and break it if he slips off and is just nipple feeding. or you could see if pulling him in a bit closer/higher etc will get him to latch back on better
