Silly question - ff when out and about... I've never done this before!

I currently mix feed - I bf all day, then ff at 4pm, and bf then top up with ff at 6 - 7pm.
We are going on holiday, and it is quite likely we will be out all day some days. I don't want the faff of mixing while out, or trying to keep a bottle cool all day.
So, can I take a bottle that has been sterilised in the morning and use a carton of ready-to-pour when I feed him at 4pm?
Times like this I wonder why I mix feed!!

making formula up yourself is cheaper!
you could use ready made as long as you use full carton as the rest needs storing in fridge once open! or take your water in the bottle invest in some powder storing thingys! an add powder when you need them

How old is your DC? If they are crawling, sticking random things in their mouths, then I wouldn't worry about sterilising tbh, just take a bottle and use ready made. Also, if it's just the odd day, could you not bf at 4, and then top up with formula when you get home?

Mumpbump · 22/05/2007 16:59

Unless your ds is tiny, I would take a bottle and rinse it with drinking water as soon as it is finished if you need to use it again. As I understand it, the main reason for sterilising is that the teats are very difficult to clean properly. If you are only using the bottle once, I am sure it is okay to do what you have said...

mumfor1standfinaltime · 22/05/2007 17:00

If I was out for a while during the day, especially hot days, I would take a steri-bottle (tommi tippee I think)These are bottles which you can throw away and are individually wrapped. Handy to keep one in your bag anyway. I would take a carton of formula ready mixed (but I am lazy!)

thanks everyone for your advice.

DS is 4 months, so I think I probably need to keep sterilising...

Also, can't bf at 4 as I have been doing this for so long I have a really low supply then..

I think I will pre-sterilise the bottle, then rinse it out before and after I use it..

Ho hum!

Can you put the dried formula in a sterilised bottle and then add boiled water when you need it?

elsieanjoanne · 23/05/2007 17:06

Ormian- not having ago but the water needs to go in bottle first then the powder as it effects the level the water will come to if powder goe in first!

pudding77 · 23/05/2007 17:37

ratfly, I used to sterilise all the bottles the night before & take them out, my ds was fine.

MinW · 23/05/2007 17:53

I regularly use pre-sterilised bottles and cartons in this way when travelling. Also usually I sterilise a batch of bottles each night so that they are ready to use the next day. They should be alright so long as you make sure the lids etc are on tightly.

OrmIrian · 24/05/2007 13:07

Does it? Oh sorry. Not really an expert as I didn't use formula that often but I tended to do it that way from time to time when we were out and about.

Aitch · 24/05/2007 13:15

ormrian's right, to the extent that you can buy tommee tippee powder holders which fit in the bottle and then you just add water when you need it. i used them all the time. expecially handy when you knoew the baby will need feeding within an hour or so as you cna fill bottle with boilig hot water and then pop the pot of powder in the neck and by the time you use it, it will be drinking temp.
there is a thing that you have to make bottles fresh (i did) and you have to make it at 70 degrees (again, i did mostly) so as to kill any bugs in the powder.

mears · 24/05/2007 16:40

ratfly - you could start BF again at 4pm then top up with ff if needed. That may well boost your supply for going on holiday. Increased feeding will increase your supply - when I went on holiday when DD was 8 months old I BF her a lot in the plane to keep her quiet really. A couple of days later I was engorged which I hadn't been for months. You might find that you would need to FF less and could just take ready made cartons for less hassle on holiday.

oldwomanwholivedinashoe · 24/05/2007 16:57

I used to take sterilised bottle out with boiling water(obviously not so boiling it could be dangerous!! but filled with boiling originally!) and then just add powder from one of those travel containers they sell in mothercare. You can premeasure formula into them so there's no messing about. It should be ok for most of the day (8hrs).
