i'm expressing fot the first time for my 2 week old ds.... how much is he likely to want in 1 feed?

Dont want to express too much as once its heated then it has to be thrown away if not used if i read correctly? Also want enough to fill him?

Oooh! I've just been looking this up for another thread and according to Kellymom you don't have to throw away unfinished ebm, even if it's been warmed. I didn't know this but apparently tests have shown that bacteria doesn't multiply in it like formula.

Here . I think my ds took around 3-4oz at that age. There's info about quantities on Kellymom as well though if you look.

I expressed due to feeding problems for the first 3 weeks. I think my DS was having about 4/5 ozs aswell. Not sure about it once its warmed but I used to express and add to previously expressed milk. As long as you use within 24 hours or freeze in that time its fine - you just need to remember when you started adding to the fresh bottle! I didn't actually warm it to be fair just fed him at room temperature - I found not warming really helped when going out for the day etc.

Actually redfea1 you've reminded me, at that age ds didn't need the bottle heated either. At some point he changed his mind which was a pain!

With both my babies, I was advised to give them 2.5oz of milk per pound of weight, divided into the proper number of feeds. So if babe weighs 10lb, she needs 25 oz in total in a day.

My two thrived on this amount of EBM, until they finally agreed to LATCH ON! At 3m in ds's case, and he did very well on the charts in the meantime.

Good luck!

gmm I kept spilling it all over, catching it with my boobs - it really made me cry (no jokes )
I finally started expressing into a cup and pouring it into a bottle every few mins, that way when I did knock it over it was only a tiny bit.
Sorry if that blindingly obvious solution already occurred to you, but the other day when I was hormonal and exhausted it seemed like a stroke of genius to me.
