I'm going back to college in September, and need to sort out leaving milk with the childminder for ds.
How many feeds should he be having? At the moment im still breastfeeding and he has it on demand.
Shall I try giving it to him from a bottle or from his magic cup (avent) which he is happy to use?
thanks everyone

Hi there
My dd is 8 months.....so not sure if this will help you. She is a GF baby, so again, this might not help!
7am: both breasts
8am: breakfast (no milk)
11am: lunch & water from her Avent Magic Cup (no milk)
2:30pm: both breasts
5pm: supper & a bit of water (no milk)
6:30pm: both breasts
7pm - 7am: sleeping
So, she has 3 feeds a day (mit eventually gets to the point!).
I've got a similar situation coming up in September, I'm going on a course for a week so will miss her 2:30pm feed - my mum is looking after her. We've decided to give her EBM in her Magic Cup - she just about likes it. I'm convinced that in your situation (and mine) babies have incredible survival instincts - they won't go hungry (I hope!!), so your ds should take it from the Magic Cup OK..........fingers crossed & I'll be thinking of you!

PS: If you're demand feeding I don't think there is a set in stone number of feeds your DS should be having - try keeping a tally for a couple of days so you can figure it out!

If he's happy to use the magic cup go with that.

Does he currently use it for milk or just for water/juice?

I leave between 4-8 oz for dd when at work. I leave at 8am and am back by 4pm. I also feed on demand. SOme days she just had 5 oz left and was fine.
It was given in 2oz portions btw over the day.

I doubt if you need to leave milk for a 9 month old if you B/F in the morning and when you are back home. I would just give water/juice with solids.

meandthomas · 12/08/2004 22:31

at the moment he just uses it for water/juice, not milk.
Mears, the childminder wanted me to leave milk and shes a lady I darent mess with!!
I think I might try it in his cup next week..

thanks everyone

Hi,
I have been back at work since baby was 7 months. He has BF in morning and bedtime and I leave him a 4oz bottle of formula for mid afternoon. I was leaving more but my HV said he only needs 4oz. Plus he has plenty of water at meals and in between, and 3 huge meals a day too. I think if they eat plenty of fromage frais/yoghurts/custards etc then this makes up for any lack of milk feeds. I would get him straight onto a cup and avoid bottles altogether!
