How do you choose a formula?! I know it needs to be one that's ok for newborns, but there are a few different brands and I imagine they're all basically the same? How do you pick which one to use?

I just got the one which I knew was available in our corner shop in which case was cow and gate

PossibiliTea · 13/05/2018 12:17

I use the one I was using in hospital, aptimil. Otherwise wouldn’t have a clue! On anti reflux milk at the mo though!

DollyLlama · 13/05/2018 12:19

First time round I went by recommendation which was aptamil, didn't agree with baby then found a post on here about hipp organic and my baby took really well to that and stopped being sick constantly.

Second time round I tried aptamil again as Hipp was really hard to get hold of but my second baby took really well to it no problems.

I think like PP you have to factor in the convenience of being able to get it but if it isn't suitable then look for recommendations.

I chose Cow amd Gate because it was the one that i could buy at a local shop. Also because you could get it premade too which is easy for out and about or if you have a power cut/no water.

TitZilla · 13/05/2018 12:22

They’re all basically the same. I’d go for the cheapest!

Smurf123 · 13/05/2018 12:24

I went with aptimil because that's what the hospital told me most people used (they saw the blank look on my face which they asked what type they should give ds)

Serenrose · 13/05/2018 12:25

I initially used aptamil as that was what we were given in hospital but then switched to cow and gate on a trial and never changed back- I found my DD tolerated it better and it was cheaper which was a win.

As pp say, something you can easily get hold of in your area is a top consideration.

My HV directed me to this website which was helpful as well -

First time i went with SMA because everybody told me it was the best. It was too heavy for DD so switched to cow & gate, which was better...she ended up on c&g comfort which was wonderful for her. This time we will use c&g if we have to ff

Perhaps slightly oddly I bought small bottles of all and tasted them. They all taste like arse apart from Hipp organic so I went with that one! Nutritionally formula is so tightly controlled that there is very little difference between them all.

Mummyh2016 · 13/05/2018 12:34

I just picked the cheapest one when I went to sainsburys which was cow and gate.

flumpybear · 13/05/2018 12:35

I used aptsmil for my first then hanged with second as it kept coming through with milk powder unmelted in his nappy!! Sonchanged to Hipp Organic and that was much better
