i think that it may help if your wife were to put cabbage leaves on her breasts.I dont know about the nipples though maybe someone else will come on her to tell you

she needs to express some milk - if she doesn't have a breast pump she can do it by hand.

Taylormama · 12/05/2007 22:39

express just enough to take the engorgment down
cabbge leaves are brill
warm bath
take 2 nurofen
sleep in a towel and a bra

has she asked the MW / HV for advice re the bleeding?
feeding is the best way to reduce engorgement so sorting whatever is causing the bleed so she can get back to feeding will help tremendously.

hand expressing

foxcub · 12/05/2007 22:39

She can sit in a hot bath and put her boobs beneath the water as heat really helps release the milk. If she then gently massages around the nipple and squeezes some milk out that should ease the engorgement without encouraging more milk. Has her milk just come in?

I meant hand expressing but couldn't describe it very well! Sitting in a hot bath will help with the expressing!

If her nipples are bleeding because they are cracked Lansinoh cream is very good.

ps - agree about the nurofen, as it reduces inflamation as well as pain...
