Can someone help calculate a ranitidine dose for me?

I would be ever so grateful for some help... my brain just can't compute the equation and I keep getting different results!

DD is 4 months old and is on 2mg per kg of weight three times a day. Our bottle is 75mg/5ml. She weighs 7.10kg.

Her dose has not been increased since she was 5.6kg so I know it needs to go up (she's currently on 0.8ml) but my GP tried telling me the new dose should be 0.3ml!

Someone with a brain come and help me! Thanks.

2mg or 0.2mg? and three times a day, or the dose divided between three times a day?

Readytopop12 · 25/03/2018 08:07

I calculate it to be 0.93mls (to administer 14mg of medication. 7kg x 2=14.)
I am a healthcare professional so I strongly advise you get your GP or whoever prescribed it to recheck their maths! You need the dose prescribed correctly. But no, you aren't going mad!

Rolypolybabies · 25/03/2018 08:09

0.95 is what I make it...

Download a medication calculator or Google one to check it

ditavonteesed · 25/03/2018 08:15

I also get 0.93ml. the formula is
what you want /what you've got x the volume its in.

so 14/ 75 = 0.18666 x 5 = 0.93333ml

ditavonteesed · 25/03/2018 08:16

I also wouldn't advise changing it without the doctor oking it though. (also HCP)

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 25/03/2018 08:18

Perfect thank you so much!

I have zero faith in my GP surgery to get this right after the fight I had to get it. After 7 consults with different people nobody would prescribe it. DD was admitted with bronchiolitis and it was prescribed then. And even with the discharge summary the GP still refused. I had to get the discharging consultant to call the surgery to tell them what to do.

So if they can't get this right I'll just request my repeat every 4 weeks and calculate my own doses. It'll save a lot of hassle.

I’d pop to your pharmacy and ask there. They are usually very good at calculating doses by weight. Usually it would be 5-10mg/kg per day in 2-3 doses. So definitely a lot more than 0.3ml!!

QueenofmyPrinces · 25/03/2018 10:25

My son is on ranitidine but on 3mg per kg.

My GP prescribes me a bottle and just tells me to increase the volume as needed as he puts weight on.

With yours I’d be giving 0.95ml. It’s technically 9.46mls but I’d round it up for ease.

Thanks so much everyone.

How much would a baby weighing 6.130 kg need ? I can’t work it out

QueenofmyPrinces · 26/03/2018 07:24

What dose is the baby on?

1mg per kg?
2mg per kg?
3mg per kg?

Owletterocks · 26/03/2018 07:26

Hi op, is your baby symptomatic on that dose? If not, it’s not recommended to automatically increase the dose unless baby is symptomatic. That way you know they are on the lowest effective dose

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 26/03/2018 09:08

Owlett she's not completely controlled, no. Our paediatric Dr who prescribed it said to weigh her and increase every month. She's supposed to be on gaviscon too but the constipation is just horrendous so we were advised to stop that as even with lactulose she was struggling.

Currently 0.3ml x 3 a day

minibov33 · 12/11/2019 08:59

Hi all.
Hoping that someone can help me calculate a dose please as apparently the mg over ml is a strange one.

30mg/ml
150mg bottle (150 mg in 5ml)

Infant weight: 10.5kg

Thank you in advance
