6 week old not latching on properly

Can anyone suggest ways of getting my DS to latch on properly again?

All was well until about 10 days ago when he suddenly decided he wasn't going to give me a nice big open mouth that I could get on my boob. Instead he's suckling before he's anywhere near me then tries to grab my nipple and just go for it. My nipples are sore and cracked and they feel bruised. It takes so many attempts to get him on right.

I've been trying to express to give me a break but I have to be in the right mood and it doesn't always work.

I have a very supportive DH and HV but no-one seems to know what I can do to sort it out. Am determined to carry on but it does hurt and I'm not enjoying feeding him anymore.

apple, this must be really frustrating for you - I do think you need a good long chat on one of the helplines. There's loads of info I would need before coming up with any suggestions. The one thing that does strike me is that he will be doing this (probably) for a reason - maybe to cope with a fast and overwhelming flow????

Hi Tiktok. I tried La Leche last week but the lady I spoke to didn't know what to suggest.

I did actually wonder if I was making as much milk as previously, it's definitely not too much milk.

He is teething (early I know) so I don't know if that is part of it.

Hm,
could be the teething. Rubbing a bit of teething gel on the gums before a feed helped my DS. Also, touching your nipple on the corner of the babs mouth may make himb root for the nipple, and therefore give you a nice big open mouth.

You could try looking at the videos on www.drjacknewman.com for some hints. Good luck. Try Lansinoh for your nipples if you're not using it already.

Monkey07 - I tried touching my nipple on the corner of his mouth and that did help. Thanks for the tip.

Will also have a look at drjacknewman.

I'm sure this is just a blip we'll find a way round it.

apple, I think it's really, really unlikely to be teething....try one of the other helplines, don't give up on them
