Pushing food out with tongue

Hi All,

My little one has LOVED his food since he started weaning at 5 months

Other than vegetables, he was mainly on food jars. We've recently started giving him fish etc with his veggies and potatoes and all of a sudden he's started pushing food out with his tongue as soon as it goes in his mouth. Is this normal?

He's 8.5 months old and has only started doing this the last week or so

Yes, he probably just doesn’t like the taste or the texture. Totally normal. You can just keep trying him on the same foods, it often takes several tries before they like something.

Some textures, especially anything starchy like potatoes, sweet potatoes can be more difficult to swallow so it's normal to push the food out.

Food out of a jar often has a watery texture, not starchy or sticky. Just be persistent with it, he'll get there eventually.

It's just odd as sometimes he likes it and eats it straight away, then he can eat the same food another day and decide he doesn't like it!

It's not that he's not hungry as when he had his yoghurt after, he ate that no problem.

I’d try not to sweat over what he eats in a day (or you’ll go mad). Instead try to look at what he eats over a week. Mine would enthusiastically wolf down a meal and the next time refuse to even touch it. Think it’s pretty normal

How is he with finger foods btw? My DS could be fussy with purees and mashed food but would eat the same things as finger foods.

He likes to eat toast and crumpets etc by himself. But carrots etc, he prefers to be spoon fed

Have you tried giving him a fish finger to try or a strip of chicken to chew on? He may like it as a finger food
