Sterilising

Just wondering if anyone could advise on when to stop sterilising. My dd is 8 months and we are still sterilising her bottles but not her food bowls, drinking cup etc. My friend said that she stopped when her ds was 5 months old and he is fine. What is the general consensus?

I stopped steralising my breast pump after about 6 months. I wash it in the dishwasher anyway which I think is pretty hot. I figured once she was crawling all over the floor anyway....

I remember that thread. been here too long.

do you have a dishwasher?
if yes, then i would stop and just make sure everything is clean, rinse with boiling water if you want to be doubly sure just before use.
with DD1 i stopped at 7 months when i saw her picking something up off the floor... with DD2 i stopped at 4 months as steriliser broke.
neither have had any tummy upset, ever.

Thank goodness I found this. I was just about to start a thread of my own. Phew

i use a nipple shield, and since DD sometimes has feeds very close together, I wash and air dry it ready, and only sterilise it every other time or thereabouts.

OK, do we think, or am I bad mummy of the week????

MrsBadger · 01/05/2007 15:17

it's fine - neither your nipples nor his mouth are sterile anyway.

Thanks Mrs B. Just got to work out how to phase it out now ...

So pleased to read this thread and the link to the earlier one. I actually got around to reading the instructions on the steriliser today and found that not only was I putting everything in wrong, I didn't put it in the microwave for long enough (it says 4 mins on the box but for a 1000+ m/w) and it also only stays sterile for 3 hours.. I assumed if I didn't open it, it would stay sterile indefinitely.

When I last expressed for DD, obviously the pump, bottle and teat were not sterile. I thought I'd damaged her

I stopped sterilising at about 6 months with ds when he was crawling round the floor putting various definitely unsterile things in his mouth. With no 2 I did not bother at all just washed stuff in very hot water.Neither have shown any ill effects as far as I can see.Call me a sloven if you wish.
