Brown mucous

DS is 3 days old today and has been bringing up mucous after feeds as to be expected. Today it was dark brown in colour though. I've never seen mucous this colour. He is EBF and was born via section which I know can mean they have a bit more to bring up in general. I do have sore nipples so it's entirely possible that it's blood he's ingested from me that he's bringing up.

Anyone have any experience of this? Xx

Not sure on this one sorry, have you asked the MW?

Congratulations on your new LO too Thanks

I would get this checked out... It is probably just blood if you have sore nipples but with such a tiny baby it is best to be sure. Can you call out of hours or 111 and see what their advice is?

I'd imagine that he swallowed blood during the section (nicu nurse). Coffee coloured?
Usually babies clear it within a few days

Thanks all.

The MW came round yesterday just as he'd coughed up fresh blood and I was a little freaked out! She said the fresh stuff was more than likely from my nipples and prescribed some gel pads to help them heal plus gave me some help with his latch which has helped a lot. The dark brown stuff was due to the section as @Anotherdayanotherdollar said (thanks Smile) My DD(3) wasn't born by section so she didn't have anything like this when she was born. I've been keeping a close eye today and there's been no strange coloured mucous so I feel a bit happier.

Glad that your MW has been helpful and the LO is ok. Are yiu nipples cracked? If so, have a read of Healing cracked nipples and abrasions on Kellymom Smile

@EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic Thanks so much for that link. They're getting better now that I'm a bit more confident about his latch and the cool gel pads have been helping. I ended up getting thrush with my DD when I was feeding her so I definitely want to avoid that this time! That was not pleasant!

Ah that’s alright, it’s the very least I could do. How are you getting on tonight? Smile

StylishDuck · 18/01/2018 21:59

Good thank you. Midwife was in earlier and DS has gone back up over his birth weight already at day 5. So I must be doing something right with the feeding Grin Feeling a bit chuffed with myself.
