BF to Sippy cup success with 4 month old?

I've been BF'ing my 4 month old since birth and although he initially took a bottle well (just to give me a break every now and again!), he has recently started to reject it. I've tried every bottle under the sun! Am now considering going straight to a sippy cup. Keen to hear success stories of others who have done this? I only ever intended on BF'ing for 6 months as I did with my first but that is now looking increasingly unlikely if he won't take anything else. It sounds selfish but keen to get some freedom back! I'd just love to hear some success stories or tips so I can keep my morale up! Thank you ladies xx

Watching with interest!!
I noticed that sippy cups have 4months+ on them in the supermarket. Dd nearly 3 months and is not a bottle refuser as such, but definitely not a lover! Much prefers the boob. Wondering if I will ever be able to stop.
So am interested to see if sippy cups are helpful!

Have you tried changing the size of the teats on the bottles? DD used the 9+ month ones when she was 5 months. Think she used to get bored of sucking loads on the tests for her age.

Kidsarekarma · 07/01/2018 22:34

DD2 (complete bottle refuser) took to a sippy cup well at that age. It had tiny holes in the spout which I think helped.

My daughter did this with my DGS. She had no success with the ones with a soft teat type , he refused them utterly but a 'hard' lipped one worked fine LIKE THIS

Charlander · 07/01/2018 22:48

Ah thank you all!! Makes me feel like there is some hope. I may try the bigger teats. The frustrating thing is he has taken it with no issues in the past so I KNOW he can do it! Why he refuses now is beyond me. I can't even go near his lips with a bottle without him freaking out! I've had a little success with the tommee tippee and just pouring it in so may keep practising with this for now. Wish me luck!x

Does sound like the bigger teats could work! Good luck Flowers

Munchkin 360!

My 2 are EBF & had these cups from 4 Months old with expressed milk in first then water from 6 months old.

It’s the same technique as breastfeeding so ought to get on with them better than bottles.

Took my DS2 a few weeks to get the
Hang of it but I highly recommend them.

Same problem with our little girl too. She didn't like the sippy cup but took some milk. Though it was just pouring in to her mouth. I've got the nuk bottle to try which I'll do at weekend with my husband as she's happiest first thing in a morning so hoping she may entertain it then! Good luck

DS suddenly took a dislike to ebm bottles, just kept trying but not pressing the issue, really ridiculously warm milk. Teat size change made no difference, no change of bottle type, just more warming and persistence

Charlander · 08/01/2018 22:54

I used the munchkin 360 with my first boy when he was older but didn't realise they could be used from 4 months- will definitely give them a whirl! I had some success today pouring the milk in to his mouth from the tommee tippee one so going to give that a few more days to see if he gets the hang of it!

we tried the nuk bottle today and my little girl took it, after refusing all the others I have. Could be worth a try if you haven't had any success.

Callamia · 14/01/2018 19:40

We did this.
I couldn’t be bothered with getting the baby used to a bottle on to need to wean them off it at a year. We used a nuk soft spout cup, so somewhere between a bottle teat and a regular supply cup.

It was messy at first, but he caught on fairly quickly. We used it only for milk, by the time we was six months are we introduced water for weaning, he used a regular Tommy Tippee sippy cup.

Firsttimemum455 · 06/04/2020 15:42

Hi @Charlander, I just wondered if you had any success with weaning on to a soppy cup at 4 months? My son is refusing a bottle and my milk supply has really dropped so I’m desperate to get him on to something! I’ve tried him on one of the oxo sippy cups - he liked chewing on the soft spout and he did manage to get all the milk out, but as soon as it was in his mouth spat it out. Would love to hear any tips or advice!

simplesmith · 17/04/2020 18:55

Hi! My sons the exact same, he’s 4 months and started teething. I think sucking on a teat is hurting his gums and we’re on the Variflow teats. We’re thinking about putting him on a sippy cup for his milk to see if it’s any better for him as he’s screaming when we try to feed him. I took the lid of his bottle off and gently poured it into his mouth and he was happy, but it’s a very messy way! So thought sippy cups might be better? Just interested how it worked out for you in the end☺️
