Hi all,

Dd is 5 days old. Feeding very well..back to birth weight, plenty of wet and (hundreds of) dirty nappies.

The issue is extreme pain on my right breaat. I havw cracked nippes which is fine (well not fine...the first latch is torture!!) But i have about 10 rock hard lumps in the breast and under arm. Ive been encouraging her to clear them in feeds but latching her on that aide more but this has resukted in ivwr production of milk on that side. The lumps and boob is filling up as quick as its emptied. Ive gone back to being "fair" with both breasts now bit the right side is extremely painful and engorged.

Im not sure what to do. How can i clear the lumps and engorgement :( im miserable with the pain of it.

Id be grateful with any advice please

I was the same and for me the only way was to use a pump and express until they went and get baby to feed on there lots until they went. You can work on reducing feedinf once the Lumps have gone. They are so painful I always had them on one side as well and it was a nightmare. They came back when I stopped breastfeeding and I had to pump that side a week after I'd stopped as they milk just kept getting stuck in little pockets.

Thanks so much for the reply. I was putting heat beanbags on last night and it did relieve the pain a little and then getting dd to latch on to draw the milk out. Its still agony, esp with the engorgement.

Ill keep persisting

If it persists even after fully emptying and if any redness it might be worth getting checked just incase of mastitis. Hope all better soon Flowers

Might be some inflammation as well if the milk has been stuck for awhile but make sure you get it all out even by massaging the area in a downward motion as baby feeds. This helped me. Hot compresses as you've been doing but the most important thing is to try and get it out as you'll feel so much better.

The breasts arent fully emptying. The underside are still very heavy after a feed. I just seem to have so much milk

Even sitting here im getting sharp stabbing pains and throbbing :(

Should i just feed with that breast or still rotate?

I used to do one full feed on one side and offer other side after bit often baby was satisfied then I offered the other side first the next time. If it's still not empty after babies fed and still lumps i'd gently work at it with a pump, I used to use the medela electric one. I would still get it checked though at the doctors to make sure you don't have mastitis.

I would express after feed to clear any lumps and than work on reducing the expression to tell your body to make less milk. you just need rid of the pain at the moment

It'll def get better and don't pressure yourself. I used to pressure myself so much and stopped breastfeeding after 6 months as I just couldn't keep up with ds it was exhausting. He's now 9 months old and eating 3 meals a day and having 2-3 bottles of formula and I feel so much better. Things will get better. This phase will pass Flowers and don't put too much pressure on yourself as happy Mum equals happy baby and you matter too. Enjoy your afternoon.

PHN came this morning and helped alot. Seems like a poor latch on that side. Dd seems to be emptying the breast better now. Still very sharp stabby pains intermittently bit please god theyll pass
