Formula whilst recovering from cold?

DD2 is 3 weeks old and is generally feeding around 15-20 times in 24 hours (3.5 - 4.5 hours a day). Overnight she's sleeping no longer than 90 minutes but it's generally 60 minutes between feeds.

Obviously, as the mother of an EBF newborn, I'm not getting much sleep. Unfortunately I also have a bad cold and cough which isn't clearing up, which I think is partly as a result of exhaustion.

I'm trying to express so DP can give her a bottle whilst I catch up on sleep, but due to her feeding pattern, there are few opportunities.

I want to bf long term so not going to risk my supply for a quick fix but will DP giving her a bottle of formula be of serious detriment to my supply?

If it's only a bottle for one or 2 nights there's no great risk to your supply.
Make sure you're taking some multivitamins and eating well for yourself too.
Hope you feel better soon. And just to say keep going with the breastfeeding, it gets a whole lot easier than this!!

The odd bottle won’t make any difference so I’d go for it

Thank you! I love breast feeding but definitely needed some reassurance on this point!

It is unlikely to affect your supply unless you are already struggling to provide sufficient milk.

Thanks Resting. She appears to be putting on weight so assume she's feeding well.

I combi fed and for a long time my supply never really changed so see how it goes but if it does dwindle you can pick it up again. We started with one bottle per day as my DD had a tongue tie which made it extremely painful and I needed the rest! I continued with a combi feed for almost 6 months when I reverted to just formula as I just couldn't be a slave to the feeding (not a BF lover, thought I would be too!). Even now, months after I finished i still have milk so I think it's case by case!

Enjoy the catch up sleep!
