Breastfeeding and drinking wine?

Hi. Looking for some advice/experiences. I breast feed my 3 month old. I am only able to feed from one breast so haven't been able to pump and freeze milk ECT all the milk I produce my baby takes :)

As its Christmas coming up if like to have some wine on Christmas day and was wondering what your advice or experiences are of having alcohol while Breastfeeding? I've read so many different opinions such as can have a glass but can't feed for 2 hours or can't drink at all or have a glass while your baby is feeding as the alcohol won't go into milk that quick ECT. Anyone?

This should help if you haven’t already read it Smile

It should be fine. I think the advice is just don't get wasted. If you are tipsy, fine. If you are drunk, just use expressed milk.

It will be absolutely fine and you don't need to use expressed milk. It's dangerous if you're constantly drinking low levels of alcohol or if you've binge drunk to a massive amount.

The main danger is falling asleep with your baby when you're drunk. If you usually co-sleep make sure the baby is somewhere separate and safe if you're planning to drink alcohol.

Totally fine.
Not against you, but In fact it's kind of a shame that you need to even ask. Because if people were told more about breastfeeding then they'd know having a drink at Christmas was totally ok.

Yes it's fine, by the time there was enough booze in you to enter your milk, you'd be dead. It doesn't pass through.
I think the term is 'if you're sober enough to look after your baby, you're sober enough to breastfeed.'

More the issue here, I find, is more dealing with the glares if you're in public because so many oeople still dont understand this Sad

A couple of glasses is fine; I used to have a glass just after a feed but really it doesn’t matter. My way of thinking was that if I felt fine to be looking after my baby then I was fine to breastfeed. My health visitor said a glass of wine or two every so often is fine.
After not drinking for so long through my pregnancy and a few weeks after I found the first glass went straight to my head anyway so wasn’t fussed about having any more than one.

My midwife suggested I have a glass of red wine at night to help with my anaemia due to a major PPH. Smile

Honestly, you can have a glass or two with absolutely no worries.

Enjoy your first Christmas with your new baby.

It's fine, just need to be sober enough to care for your baby- same as if you were giving formula.

Babyblues052 · 28/11/2017 20:28

Thanks so much everyone. I was just planning on having a glass or two throughout the day so no where near enough to be drunk (although I've not had a drink in almost a year so it'll probably hit hard haha)

@Oblomov17 I don't take offence I know what you mean. I didn't get much education at all tbh just some leaflets passed to me I've done all my research myself.

I do co sleep but i have a moses basket for him so he will be safely sleeping in there Smile

The best advice I was given about this was, "don't drink so much that you drop the baby." E.g - don't worry about it too much!

Pluckedpencil · 29/11/2017 06:24

haha Imogen! Good advice there! I have stopped worrying after several years of breastfeeding. Never seen any side effects whatsoever.
