hi,
dd is 7 weeks old and im feeding on demand which has generally been between 2.5-3hrs. Since birth if she has stirred anywhere around the time a feed is due ive been feeding her. However my mother said that she should be starting to go a little longer now and that instead of assuming that because the 3 hours are up i should feed her i should wait until she cries or shows more signs of hunger. i think what shes saying is that if i carry on doing as i am now ill be feeding every 3 hours when perhaps dd wouldve gone longer.
does this make sense, do they naturally extend to say every 4 hours.

Well my view at that age was to pack in as many feeds during the day in the hope that the baby might be less likely to wake up for milk at night. Don't know if there is a correlation, but my dd was a champion sleeper at night, so I was happy. I continued to do 3 hourly feeds for quite a while. I didn't really space out the feeds until I started introducing solids at 6 months.

If your dd is not obviously demanding milk you could try waiting a bit longer. But equally if you're both happy with the status quo just keep on going.

Hi kbaby, i agree with Pidge, keep going on 3ish hourly feed, she will start drinking more in a feed, two tips - never wake a baby to feed and never let her cry from hunger. (i know its easier said that done)you know more or less when she wants to eat so when she wakes up on her own, feed her... dont let her have to cry for it. If she is not hungry, leave it and try in 25 - 20 mins time again. Play with her and enjoy her inbetween.
