Similac or Enfamil ...

Has anyone’s little one been prescribed Similac or Enfamil milk ?

My son is 8 weeks old and we have found out he has an intolerance to cow milk protein . The doctor has prescribed him Similac but I have also heard of Enfamil and wondered which is best or what the difference is ?

I am not keen on trying loads of different formulas as I worry it may upset him even more x

These formulas are not much in use in the UK - and we are mostly uk here :)

I think Enfamil speciality formulas are available here but no Similac.

So I don't think you will get much info here - in any case both Similac and Enfamil are based on cows milk, unless you get the special hydrolysed ones.

@tiktok I am Uk based and Similac was prescribed to me by my doctor which is available in the uk same as Enfamil .

But they are only available on prescription x

Hi munchkin. My DS was prescribed similac a few weeks ago at 6 weeks old. It's smells pretty bad and he pulled a few faces at first, but got used to it. Sorry if tmi, but expect a noticeable change in the nappies!

We are currently trying him back on Aptimil, as advised by the dietitian. His milk allergy symptoms have returned slightly, but now he's refusing the similac completely. Can't say I blame him, it does smell pretty rough, I wouldn't want to drink it myself...

Can I ask what milk allergy symptoms you experienced?

Sorry meant to say, similac is only partially hydrolysed. We were also prescribed neonate. This is fully hydrolysed (and really smells) but we haven't felt the need to use it.

So he has had severe reflux , terrible colic , drop in weight , in pain when drinking milk and not taking on more that 3 ounces per feed and then vomiting at least an ounce every feed, a stuffy nose . His crib next to me would be soaking wet from bringing up milk . We tried gaviscon for four weeks and did not improve . Also a type of rash/spots on his cheeks .

The head paediatric consultant at the local hospital said to change his milk ASAP.

He took to Similac quite well and seems a lot happier on it so far . It does stink ! And the green poop 🙈

Does similac contain corn syrup? I’ve not heard great things about this as an ingredient in formula and from my own research I’d say ask for something that doesn’t contain it like aptamil pepti as a first line choice and if that doesn’t help then neocate ?

Similac is first choice in wales for babies with CMPA

did you try ranitidine?

My son had cma. But a few other issues too to be fair.
First line was ranitidine plus formula. Weight still dropping and vomiting and diarrhoea ++. Then neocate. Smells awful, the vomit is worse but he did gain weight. Although it was by nasogastric tube at that point as he’d lost so much.
I don’t know anything about Semiliac but in my limited experience the newest formula on the block was always being heralded as the next big thing.
