Newborn hates my right boob!

Ebf newborn DS, now 10 days old. Breastfeeding seems to be going ok so far but for the last 24 hours or so he's started refusing to feed from my right side! He'll be obviously hungry but will fuss and cry when I try to latch him on to the right, but then latch immediately and with no problem on the left. I had this problem a bit in the very early days but it seemed to sort itself out, so I'm confused about why it's started again.

Any suggestions? I've started expressing little bits from the right side to keep supply going and ease discomfort but really want to get this sorted!

You could try the rugby hold. Maybe he prefers lying on one side so if you just shift him round to your right he maybe ok.

Could it be fast let down? I had the same but with the left side (we called it the scary boob!) I only put DD on it when she was really hungry i.e. after a nap and made sure she was really well winded afterwards. She's 13 weeks now and can tackle it no problem. I took advice from the KellyMom website, and I think one of the recommendations was not to block feed from one side before a certain age, as this can affect supply.

He could be uncomfortable. Sometimes newborns can get a bit sore from being picked up loads imo. Maybe try lying down on the bed with him so he’s not being held?

See try rugby ball. I had to do this with DD from the beginning. Wasn't til many years later that I worked out it may have been connected to the side of her head hurting due to the ventous bruise

Thanks so much for these replies. I struggle a bit with the rugby ball hold but will definitely give it another go. I think I have quite fast let-down on both sides as once he's actually latched on he seems to get milk everywhere and there's lots of gulping and gasping, but as this applies to both left and right I don't think that's what's putting him off here... will experiment a bit more with positioning and see if I can find something that works. Desperate to try now as getting quite uncomfortable but he is sound asleep!!

A bread feeding counsellor showed me a position where they sort of sit on your leg so the baby is vertical for feeding. Hard to explain. Some babies prefer laying on one side more than the other. Good luck.

Update: tried rugby hold resting DS on a v pillow. Had some success! Will persevere as hopefully this will be the answer. Thanks all for your advice.

Ds had this & it seemed to be that he didn't like lying on his right side. We went to a cranial osteopath & that sorted it (ds had got his head a bit stuck during birth & the osteo thought there might have been discomfort from that.. )

It was a bit woo.. but it did the trick!

Can you access some breastfeeding support via your midwife or HV? They’d be able to show you some more positions to try which might help.
