Getting rid of bottles

Dd is just turned one. We have just made the swap from formula to cows milk with no problem but the hv also advised that we cut out the bottle by 1.
The problem is that dd just won't use the soppy cup. She can and does for water with meals but won't have more than a couple of mouthfuls. She is then grumpy and unhappy until she is given the bottle.

We have tried lots of different cups but to no avail. Can someone please tell me how to sort this.

@WinkyisbackontheButterBeer I have the same problem apart from mine is two wish I cut it out ages ago. Maybe it is a comfort thing. Try giving juice in a proper if they drink it. I switch between a big juice bottle and Tommee t bottle so he doesn't have loads of milk bottles now I think it is just a attachment/ comfort thing with them.
Hopefully it will phase out for u and me.

I don't know anyone who got rid of the bottle by 1. I know it's recommended but I don't think many manage.

My ds is almost 2, he enjoys a bedtime bottle. Drinks from a cup during the day. it's a comfort and fills him up for night. He finishes it within a few minutes then we brush teeth so I don't know what harm it can do.

Sorry this isn't helpful advice to stop bottle but just letting you know if you don't manage you aren't the only one.

Try the nuby bottles with the soft teat that is shaped like a cup tray but soft, they get used to those really quickly. Good stepping stone. Get them in Tesco/boots etc.

Thank you. It's good to know that I'm not alone in this. Part of me thinks she's just not ready and I should go with her signals but the other part is worried about her teeth.

Jakeyboy1 we have tried one of those and she's still not impressed. Also tried a 360 cup, a bog standard tommee tippee and a few others. She is happy to use them all briefly but not enough for her milk.

I choose to not follow that advice - sleeping was getting better at that stage and the bottle helped that! She does only have 2 bottles a day (bedtime and morning) and we’re about to make the morning one little and offer a small milk at breakfast (she has just started drinking milk from a sippy cup at about 17 months - she’s been using it for water since about 7 months!) but the bedtime one is staying for now.

Dc1+2 here were bottle free at 12 months no issues

Dc3 held out a little longer and used one of the nuby cups up thread until 18 months

I think i deffinitley is a comfort thing

My dc4 is almost one and i think we will go the nuby route again as he is quite attatched to milk and cuddles before bed

I agree that 1 is young to drop the bottle. My DS was the first amongst his peers to do so but I think he was closer to 18months.

Unless she is having 5/6 bottles a day or is using them to swing juice/squash from then I suspect her teeth will be fine for a while yet :)

My DS is 3 now and I know a fair few of his peers still have a bottle of milk at night. We stopped DS's only because he stopped drinking most of it, so we stopped offering it and he wasn't fussed, so it just went.

we are all different but i would ignore that advice too. i think by about 18 months mine had 2 a day and as they increased their ability to sustain themselves with food they ended up with just a bottle at bedtime. when they gave that up i cant remember? 2.5 maybe.

My DS will drink from a tumbler or sippy cup through the day but for a nap and bedtime he still has a bottle at 21 months. I only know one person who managed to get rid of bottles at 1yo and her DD screams for 30 minutes before going to sleep. Maybe not related but I don't want to upset DS routine - he didn't really sleep til he was 1 and only started taking a bottle from me a few months after that.

Nuk does beakers with both soft non spill silicone spout and free flow spouts too. We ended up swapping to them as they sell replacement spouts for when they have chewed them to pieces, with the nuby beaker we were going to have to replace he whole thing which gets expensive.

I think i have one of those in a cupboard never used actually mrspanda i may give it a whirl before i buy a nuby. Do the nuby ones still not have a lid?

Right, thank you ladies. I am going to stop stressing about what we should be doing and just go with it for now. Dd defiant still needs the bottles at present. She did take 4oz out of the nuby cup this aft so we have made a start.
It's so hard with your first. I feel like I'm constantly worried that I'm not doing things right. Then, just when I think I've gotten a handle on it, we're onto the next stage and I'm back to being clueless.

Thank you all again for the reassurance. It's nice to know that I'm not completely fucking up.
