Dd is 12 days old and feeding pattern has changed - help or advice please.

I have a question to all of you who have BF in the past or currently. I have been BF dd who is now 12 days old but today she seems to have gone wild feeding off me at least every hour but sometimes even more than this. My boobs feel flat which is scaring me as I wonder if my production is not enough for her. Is this normal or should I be concerned? I would be so grateful for anyones opinion or advice on this. Am really trying not to stress over it but am getting worried about it now. Thanks to anyone who can help me with this.

Forgot to say that she has been feeding every 2-3 hours until now, occasionally wanting an extra feed. Its just today that I feel I cant put her down. She is struggling to settle and just seems to want to feed. She seems well, I have no concerns that she is poorly but dont know why she seems to be feeding continuously today.

they do that at this age unfortunately. Some days they will fall in a 3/4 hourly feeding routine. Other days it will feel like they are attached to you all day. Is this your first? It sounds like you are doing brilliantly...

In my experience some days ds and dd would feed off and on all day and others would space out feeds and be more sleepy. It always helped me to go out for a walk - the fresh air will do you both no ened of good and give your boobs a break too!

Its my second. Had big problems with BF ds first time round and really wanted it to go well now. It has until now just feel like I am fighting a losing battle today! Do feel better that its a normal thing though. Thankyou so much. Perhaps I need to take her out for a walk to try and settle her for a while.

mammyjo - this behaviour is normal. Is your baby gaining weight? Is your baby pooing a few times every day? If so, then you can be pretty sure all is well

mammyjo, don't forget yourself. try to rest even if you can't sleep, have some big dinners, and hot shower to get milk going. She's still so little, I'm sure you're doing fine, please try not to worry! Hugs!

Thankyou all so much for making me realise whats happening is normal! She is gaining weight and poos loads (up to 7 times in a day) so I am sure she is getting enough. What bothered me was that she seemed unable to satisfy her hunger today and that hadnt happened before. Have been out for a walk and she did settle for a while which gave me a break too.

Can I just ask another question if anyone is around. I looked on a website which someone had linked to on another thread about BF. It said that I should be emptying one breast then offering the other, but how do I know she has emptied one? I know that probably sounds like a dull question but I would be really grateful for any advice on this please. Thanks very much.

IT is likely a growth spurt, they tend to have them every 3 weeks or so, for me it lasted 3 days with ds, but completely normal, the Kelly mom site explains this in detail:

mammyjo - no need to worry about 'emptying' one breast first. You can't really do this. Best to follow your baby's lead - she will give you an indication of if and when she wants to swap sides

basically, just make sure you're feeding more or less equally from both, I swapped my wedding ring over each time. I found DS sucked for about 30-40 mins every 3 hours on on breast, then I just put him on the other one for the next feed at the same age as yours. Don't worry about 'empty' or 'full' breasts, but I would swap every feed just to make sure you don't get too engorged etc. Basically the breast is empty if it's floppy and small, but even so baby can get milk out of it if they need to. The advice is given because of this 'hindmilk' thing, but they should get enough if suck on same one for 15 mins.// hope this helps!

Thanks everyone for the advice. I know there are no hard and fast rules, it is just confusing as different people will advise different things. Good to know that the emptying thing is not something to worry about too much. She does tend to feed for around 15 mins on one side so hopefully she should be getting enough. I have got a bracelet which I swap around so I make sure I swap sides regularly to feed. Thanks again all, I really do feel better about things today.
