EBF baby only poos once a week

DC2 is 10 weeks old and EBF. For the past four weeks has only pooed once a week. The poo is normal, just copious(!), and she doesn't appear to have any problems when she does go. She has the usual number of wet nappies that you'd expect and is in otherwise good health.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it just a phase?

HV and GP are both surprised but want to 'see how she gets on' as she isn't dehydrated, ill or distressed.

I think it can be quite normal with breast fed babies

mamaduckbone · 23/09/2017 13:46

Ds2 was like that for a while, but my god when he went, he really wentGrin - if she's feeding normally and doesn't seem distressed when she goes I wouldn't worry.

Hi, as long as your baby is gaining weight, not in pain, has plenty of wet nappies and the poo is a normal consistency/colour then it should be fine. My daughter varied from once every few days to four or five times a day throughout our first few months.

Polly99 · 23/09/2017 13:52

Perfectly natural, I'm surprised the GP and HV don't know this as it is not uncommon.
It isn't constipation, it is because breast milk is a very good food and so there's not much waste.

BertieBotts · 23/09/2017 13:53

Normal with exclusively breastfed babies.

Yes it can be normal.

Nothing to do with 'no waste' - this is a myth :)

If it was 'no waste' you wouldn't get the poonami that happens every X days.

My DD2 did this. It was like a big event in our house when she did her weekly poo!

someblondegirl · 23/09/2017 17:17

Same here. I fear when the weekly poo will arrive

DuggeeHugs · 23/09/2017 18:27

Thanks all.

DS was also EBF - he pooed three times a day without fail - so this is the complete opposite!

tea Thursday's are getting that way here now. I put an inco sheet on the changing mat so the mess is easier to clear Confused

Totally normal! Ebf DD went a lot longer than that regularly. Always best to check with doctor etc but it is totally normal for now.

TheClacksAreDown · 01/10/2017 21:29

DS1 would go every 5-10 days around that age

QueenJane · 01/10/2017 21:36

DS varied a lot. Sometimes once a week and sometimes 3 times a day. GP wasn't concerned.
