By Guppy
My ds finally figured out the fine art of breastfeeding 7 and a half weeks later Big Grin!!

He was jaundaced at birth and never really took to the breast, and when he was re-hospitalised, they asked for me to express and bottle feed so that we could know how much fluids he was getting, and I was so worried and upset that I agreed. So he got used to the bottle, and I just didn't have the heart to push bf on him.

I kept expressing though, and trying him on the breast from time to time, diminishing as he got older, but on Wednesday he suddenly took to it!! I had cut my expressing to twice a day last week, but my supply recovered so incredibly quickly, and now I'm so glad I kept up with the expressing.

I can't believe how quickly he empties the breast compared to the pump - the biggest reason I cut down and gave him mostly formula was that it was taking me an hour to express 100ml from both breasts, and that isn't even enough for one feed. He empties it in 10 mins flat!

My nipples are now [/i]killing me, of course! Do you have any recommendations on what I should use, apart from Lansinoh, eg shields, particular breast pads?

chip, i am always recommending Silverette as they healed me completely within 48 hours and my nipps we about to fall off!

You can get them from Breastfeeding Heaven They also do a Silver Healing Breast Pad but i have not used this so could not comment..

Your story is truly inspirational

determination, it's not my story, it's Guppy's she's a fellow magicmum! I just cut and pasted her story on here as I thought it might give hope to MNers in the same situation.

Will let her know about silverette, though!

I have a similar story to Guppy. My ds got the hang of breastfeeding when he was 4 months old. Up until then I expressed for him and gave him ebm in a bottle. He is 7 months today and still exclusively breastfed

determination · 01/04/2007 13:26

Well done Sterny

You can prob tell that i am suffering from sleep deprivation! it definately is a form of torture...

Sterny · 01/04/2007 13:31

Hi determination,

I know what you mean! I have turned into an insommniac (sp?) lately. I lie awake until 3am whereas ds sleeps 13 hours. I hope your little one is doing well now and you got bf probs sorted. I meant to ask you whether you know about the bliss (premature baby charity) message board? It is ace. Go to bliss.org.uk and follow the link to the message board.
