Newborn not pooing

Bazoo23 · 14/08/2017 10:18

Hi all. My baby is 5 days old today and has not pooed yesterday or so far today.
He had several dirty nappies the day he was born, none on day 2, 3 on day 3 and nothing since.
When should I worry? He is formula fed.
Thanks.

I'd definitely ring your midwife or HV for advice Smile I'm pretty sure it's expected that they poo a few times a day

User0ne · 14/08/2017 10:32

hmmm , can you give your HV a ring? It's normal for bf babies to poo less often. Formula fed babies to get more constipation but I don't know how long without a poo would be normal at this stage for formula fed.

Hopefully someone will be along in a minute to help

As soon as I posted this he has done a huge nappy. Not hard poo and he didnt struggle passing it so hopefully not constipation, he hasn't been unhappy in himself either. He didnt feed well in the beginning and I've just spoken to my midwife who says it could be down to that.
Thanks Smile

You should be having a fair amount of black meconium poo up until around 5 days then you get the mustard ones. Definitely contact the HV or midwife in case there's an issue.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 14/08/2017 11:30

The meconium can stop a lot sooner than day 5 so don't worry about that. All babies are different (as are all adults!) He'll probably settle into a pattern himself soon enough. Try not to worry about it. If his tummy feels hard, he starts vomiting or is really struggling/straining contact your HV.
Congrats on the new baby and enjoy the squishy cuddles Flowers

As long as the poo isn't hard or dark, it won't be constipation.

Bazoo23 · 14/08/2017 13:00

It was definitely soft and mustard like and he didnt seem in any discomfort. Hopefully he'll settle into a pattern. The midwife didnt seem concerned.
Thanks for the congrats, my daughter is nearly 5 so its been a long time since I've had newborn cuddles Smile
