Dd is hysterical during feed, anyone else?

Dd is 16 weeks and when i try to burp her half way through her feed she is hysterical, really screaming and crying and is bright red in the face. She sometimes does it at the end of her feed but definitely isn't as bad as half way through.

She did have colic when she was a few weeks old but thats now gone. I do give her a dummy when trying to burp her which most of the time works but again sometimes it does nothing.

Im just wondering if anyone else has experienced this or knows what it could be or any advice?

Perhaps she's cross because she can't be doing with being interrupted?

I didn't dare burp my baby during a feed she would have been VERY pissed off at the bottle being taken away from her. I just let her drink until she pushed it away and then burped her.

I have thought that its because we are taking the bottle away from her but ive always been under the impression a baby has to be burped in the middle of a feed and no one has ever told me otherwise.

Im guessing there isn't really an issue with not burping half way through? I'm a first time mam so this is all mega new!

I read on the NHS website that far too much emphasis is placed on burping babies, so maybe it could wait until you have finished the feed? I'm pregnant with my first so this has only come from reading the NHS website in preparation.

Also, it says "Your baby may need short breaks during the feed and may need to burp sometimes. When your baby does not want any more feed, hold them upright and gently rub or pat their back to bring up any wind. This may only be a small amount."

So I guess it's recommended to do it after finishing

How is she after a feed? I used to burp my son in-between feeds because he was hysterical at the end and would throw up a full feed if just one burp. If she's okay with sickness and wind after the feeds then I'd also just burp at the end.

I never realised how much work burping was, but some babies are absolutely fine and dandy without getting burped, it amazes me!!

Christ if I'd tried to burp any of mine half way through a feed they would have been furious!
Is she finishing her bottle? If she's crying at the end has she had enough?

PonderLand its very rare that she's sick after a feedl. Sometimes shes that hysterical when i try to burp her in between that i give up before shes burped and give her the rest of the bottle. If that happens sometimes shes sick after other times she just does a massive burp. So really i don't know if shes sick because she hasnt burped.

I didnt realise how much work burping was either. If im honest i cant wait until we dont have to do it anymore! I might just give it a go on her next feed and not burp her

shamoffour yeah she always finishes her bottle. She currently has 5oz but whenever we try to up it to 6oz she's always sick

My baby hates being stopped halfway through and will often be too upset to burp so I don't generally stop half way through any more and she's fine with a big burp at the end

My ds1 used to go crazy if I stopped half way through a feed. Apparently I was the same as a baby. I wouldn't bother winding until the end.

Try not burping half way through and see what happens. She won't explode or anything!

None of mine ever needed burping!

If she doesn't sick up much then I'd give it a go, good luck for the next feed! Muslins at the ready

I used to wind them at the end I would give it a few minute and if they didn't burp I would just leave it.
If they seemed to be in discomfort I would keep trying but I tried not to get too hung up on it.
Is she upset during the feed?
Mine used to get squirmy and cross when it was time to change the flow on the teat. They were always way ahead of where they should be on teat flow but maybe they were just greedy

Well dp has just fed dd and didnt do the burp half way through. Dd burped after the feed and hasnt been sick but still started crying and screaming when she finished she is tired though so could be that.

Do you think she might be still hungry?

Is it worth trying a bit more milk?
Does she have a dummy?
Maybe she's missing the comfort she gets from sucking?
My guess would be more milk though.

Well whenever we try to up her milk she's always sick after it so its obviously too much for her (hv said this too) and we only ever up it by 1 ounce. Yeah she has a dummy and calmed down quite quickly so it wasnt too bad

It actually sounds like mild acid reflux. Burping brings up acid and it might be painful. However, your DD still finishes bottles so it is a sign that the pain is manageable.

My DD had pretty bad reflux and her feeds were an absolute nightmare. She used to stop after 2oz and go absolutely hysterical. She was still starving though so I had to feed her while she was screaming in tears. Medications eventually helped but I am still dreading those reflux days.

The options are: (1) to try anti-reflux formula (it works much better than Gaviscon), (2) ask GP for advice and potentially medications or (3) wait for your DD to outgrow reflux (if it is indeed the problem).

TBH the don't need much winding at 4 months as they are moving more and able to get it out themselves. Is she rolling? I would knock it in the head all together if yes.

Dd is currently on cow and gate comfort cause we put her on that to help with the colic. When shes actually having the bottle shes fine its just when we take it off her. We always joke that shes just greedy and always wants milk but i have been thinking about taking her to GP.
