Upper Lip Tie Help

My LO is 6 weeks old and has been suffering from severe wind. She is EBF and makes a clicking noise whilst feeding, constantly unlatches after only a few seconds and needs winding every minute or so as she is screaming in pain. We've tried infacol, dentinox and gripe water, none of which have helped much. After looking for other solutions I came across a picture of a lip tie and checked her mouth, and I think she may have one. Please can someone give me advice, firstly with if I'm right in thinking this is a lip tie, and secondly, what do to if it is?

It is extremely unusual for upper lip tie to be present without tongue tie also being present. I'd get her checked by a Tongue Tie practioner.

Yep. Looks like lip tie. Ds2 had upper lip tie. Made latch more shallow as couldn't quite get top lip to flap out (can't quite work out how to describe it). Think lipstick shape nipples after a feed! 6 week mark was a nightmare as lots of short frequent feedings and unsettledness (But generally 6-8 week mark is nightmare for most babies as growth spurt and changes in sleep cycles).

I had to work really hard to get as deep a latch as possible at each feed and use technique to 'flip' top lip out. I used the following resource (below) as health visitor and lactation consultants didn't have a scooby about this where I live. Generally UK doesn't officially diagnose or treat upper lie - Canada and US more advanced in this area.

Upper lip ties can cause gap in teeth permanently (DH has this) and some dentists in uk will laser them in children but but not usually babies. Although I belueve there are a couple of doctors who will based in London, Southampton and Manchester. I'M based in Scotland and wasn't keen on travel or procedure so muddled through with improving latch.

Good news is that as ds got bigger the latch became better as his mouth grew. I still had to keep watchful eye on latch but breastfed until he was toddler.

Yes i would say lip tieDS has a thicker one but DD2's one is similar. They are a right pain but flipple technique (google if you dont know it) got DS to 3 & DD2 is still BF at 2 & half.
I would definitely look at tongue tie as DS & DD1 have them & BF was trickier with them.

DS split his aged about 4 & dentist told me it's normal for kids to bust them themselves - soooooo much blood but healed super fast.
Tooth brushing is a bit of a pain.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. We have a local breastfeeding support group where I believe there is a midwife with experience of tongue tie so my plan is to take DD along to this on Friday for some advice. Thanks again for you replies.

If she's coming off, try some breast compressions. I'd ring one of the Bfing Helplines in the morning to see if they have any information on feeding a baby with lip and tongue tie, especially as your support group isn't for a few days. Do you have the helpline numbers?
