Early weaning/baby led...

DS2 is just over four months and has always suffered with quite bad reflux and he is on medication for it. He is sick all the bloody time.
Anyway, HV and doc have advised weaning a little earlier than 6 months, but I fancied trying baby-led weaning this time around. Having looked into it, I'm not sure it's a particularly sensible idea in his situation? I can't imagine him being able to pick up food just yet? It seems it would all take a lot longer and the point of weaning early is to get him off the milk asap.

Am I right? Any thoughts/advice very welcome

Thanks

Hi jojo.

You won't get many positive responses on here. I weaned ds at 17 weeks for medical reasons (like you, reflux, etc).

I would think that at 4 months blw would be impossible because they don't have the trunk control, neck control or hand control.

With Ds I kept things very simple basically root veg purees and a very limited number of purees at that. I didn't want to introduce too many foods as it was earlier than the six month recommendation. Fwiw, I've read in a few places that they are beginning to think between four and six months should be the guidance rather than just six months.

When Ds got to six months we started offering finger foods. He now refuses all purée so we just blw.

We use a book called super nutrition for babies. It's written by a pediatrician and is slightly unorthodox but we want to help.sort his.problems and feel this could help.

Good luck!

Thank you for your reply.
I think I will do that then, start with purées (as I did with DS1) but just start a bit earlier. And then just introduce finger foods as soon as he is ready.
And thanks for the book tip too.

If you're weaning for reflux reasons, then BLW isn't really suitable as like you say, the point is to get them onto solids fairly quickly. But you can definitely introduce finger foods to play with as well :) I wouldn't necessarily wait for some arbitrary date to give finger foods, because it can always start as a messy play sort of thing.
