breastfeeding and weight loss?

Vmama · 22/03/2007 18:19

im 5 weeks into bfeeding and have yet to lose any weight after birth weight loss. As i had c section im doing very little so am pretty inactive but thought id lose some weight thru bfeeding.
does it take a while for weight loss to start and is it more likely to happen when i start being more active again?

have only lost half my pregnancy weight so far and feeing a bit despondent that ill never shift the rest

you may not want to hear this but sometimes you don't lose any weight until you stop breastfeeding - that's what happened with me after DS2 anyway.

This time round I don't know how much/if I've lost any weight cos the scales need a new battery but I'm 5 weeks in as well but eating approximately my own body weight in chocolate and cake every day so it's very unlikely I've lost any!

Try not to worry about it too much and just concentrate on recovering after your section anf feeding and enjoying your baby

GreenandBlackOtter · 22/03/2007 18:30

me too sadly never lose it till i stop

dingolimpet · 22/03/2007 18:30

I was the opposite, i put weight on when I stopped.

DumbledoresGirl · 22/03/2007 18:31

After my first baby, I did not lose all my pregnancy weight gain until I had ds2 18 months later. Just a thought for you!

Vmama · 22/03/2007 21:49

i wa so hoping someone would say -you lose all the weight but it doesn't start to happen til 6 weeks in!

I guess i'll have to sto eating choc every day and start doing some exercise then!

There have been threads about this before and it seems that it works both ways.
However it did seem to be the case that in general people who bf for more than 6 months thought it was after 6 months that the real benefit kicked in.

mears · 22/03/2007 21:51

There is no doubt about it you lose weight when you are breastfeeding if you follow a healthy diet.

I didn't lose weight because i ate like a pig

Dragonfairy · 22/03/2007 21:52

I too, didn't lose anything at all until I stopped, but then it fell off pretty quickly (at least the first stone did!!)

colander · 22/03/2007 21:52

I didn't lose any weight when breastfeeding so I waited until I stopped (nearly 12 months) and then crash dieted. However, I am a lazy cow who snacks on everything in the house so that could explain it.

Olihan · 22/03/2007 21:55

Ah, Mears, so that's what I'm doing wrong . '500 extra cals a day for bfing' doesn't mean 'eat whatever comes to hand, especially if it's made of chocolate' then? Bummer!

I had DS in October and ate like a pig up until Christmas and shock, horror was a porker and had lost nowt' after inital post-delivery loss.

Have been a paragon of virture since 1st Jan and am now 2.5 stone down, no starving just healthy nosh. Very little exercise other than walking either TBH.

worleythewisp · 22/03/2007 22:11

i stayed a stone heavier for years after i had ds1 ( i bf for 5 months then joined weight watchers and never lost any, i was just stuck for months at the same weight so gave up) now with ds2 i have been bf for 9months and have only lost a stone scince having him. for the past 5 months i have gone to the gym twice a week which has had hardly any effect whatso ever. im so dissapointed. so im hoping it will go when i finish bf then, although i dont know when im going to do that. i still have 4 stone to go to be back to pre ds1 weight.

ib · 23/03/2007 10:46

I think it depends on how active you were before, tbh. I was very physically active right up to the birth and it was a real shock to me how many hours of sitting still bf involves - more than compensates for the 500 extra calories. Not eating loads either, as ds is dairy intolerant so my diet is very boring (I love dairy...)

To me the proof is that the one week ds accepted being worn in a sling and I could move around I lost a fair bit of weight - and it was the only week since the birth that I did!

IdreamofClooney · 23/03/2007 11:14

I think a lot of it is just luck and your body type etc.

I was very slim and fit before I got pregnant with DS - I ran a half marathon a couple of weeks before I got pregnant.

I kept active during pregnancy - still cycled to work until it felt unsafe, swam tons, walked tons, did yoga and water aerobics for pregnacy. I balloned in the last month and I reckon I must have gained 4 stone

After DS was born I was full of energy adn raring to go - I was out with him the the sling the day after he was born and cleaned the flat communal stair (three flights) four days after he was born. I used to walk everywhere and started swimming again as soon as I could.

I hardly lost any weight despit BF and eating healthily. My friend who had a CS was much less active in pregnancy and after and yet the wieght dropped off her.

I was so jealous when we went shopping for new jeans when her baby was a couple of months old and she got back into her old size, by baby is a year older and I am still not 100% back to normal

Hopefully your wieght will come off but if it doesn;t just remember that you are doing a wonderful thing for your baby by BF and that is more important then fitting into skinney jeans

Although I couldn't see that when I couldn't even do up size 16 trousers

exhaustedmumof2 · 23/03/2007 16:16

I only breastfed dd1 for a few days and never lost all my weight. Had dd2 5 weeks ago and am breastfeeding and am now the weight I was when I fell preg with dd1(haLf a stone less than I was when I fell preg this time around. DD1 will be 3 next month. I swear it must be the bf'ing that is working for me as I am eating like the worlds chocolate supply is about to run out!

yomellamoHelly · 23/03/2007 16:38

With ds1 after the initial wieght loss I stayed 1.5 stones heavier until 2 weeks after I stopped bfing, then it all dropped off. Nopthing eldser had changed.
This time lost all extra weight within 2 weeks.
Ds2 is 3 months now though and I am currently 1 stone heavier than I ought to be, iyswim. Am continually hungry though. Hope it'll fall off again after I stop.
