Anyone experienced this agonising breast pain following mastitis?

Am at the end of my rope with this and so hope someone can help.

Have been feeding DS2 for 14 months, in process of stopping. I've had mastitis 3 times in the same breast, most recently a month ago which I think was triggered by a milk blister. A duct remained blocked until a couple of days ago and I was very engorged in this breast, but after trying various things, it seems to have cleared and breast is now soft and 'normal' - no lumps or engorgement.

What's remained though is an absolute mother of a pain in the breast, which wakes me at night and currently has me near tears this morning. It's like a stabbing pain right through the breast and to the nipple and comes and goes. I think I have a pretty high pain threshold but am unable to go back to sleep when it's there until I take ibuprofen.

I don't fit any boxes for what it could be - could this still be the result of the blocked duct, like after pains or something? There's no redness so am thankfully confident it isn't an abscess and I'm otherwise well, but am getting a bit worried. I assume it's related to breastfeeding / the blocked duct.

Am thinking of returning to the gp if it continues next week to ask for a scan, but wanted to check if anyone can advise or has experience over the weekend.

I have reduced BF very gradually and my other breast is fine, so I don't think that has caused anything.

Thank you for reading, any thoughts appreciated!

No idea sorry but it sounds awful. Have you tried calling one of the Bfing Helplines to see if they have any suggestions?

I had these symptoms after mastitis
It was (for me) thrush that spreads from the nipple due to the antibiotics and damps conditions
I took 1 anti fungal pill and expressed for 24 hours and was better
It is a knife like pain
My GP didn't know about it but looked into it for me and it was treated easier
Good luck

Have you had any antibiotics and how long was your course if you did?

chunkychicken1 · 20/05/2017 21:33

OP I had exactly what you describe and for me it was thrush. It was treated with a course of tablets, I can't fit the life of me remember what they're called though, sorry. Get to your GP asap, I really feel for you as the pain is horrific x

Hello, this is entirely normal after mastitis, it can hurt for up to a month. Take paracetamols and if you can manage a hot bath it can help bring out any residual blocked milk (wet flannels on the problem boob).

If you still have heat, veins apparent or tracking or swelling/lumps go see your GP :)

I would ask the GP to send off a sample of your milk for analysis. I had multiple bouts of mastitis and thrush for 5 months, painful as hell. The GP eventually agreed to send off a milk sample (after trying on multiple occasions to convince me it would be better to give a bottle grrr!) and it turned out I had a very bad staphorious infection. A course of the correct antibiotics, and I went on to feed DD until she was two.

*staph aureus , sorry!

For the thrush it was just one tab of fluconazole

hawaiibaby · 22/05/2017 06:43

Thank you all so much. Thrush didn't even occur to me because I've never had this kind and had no idea it could be this painful! From what you've said, and reading up on it, am pretty sure it is. The pain is just as described, very deep and sharp, and I had antibiotics for a week with the latest bout of mastitis. I'll ring the Gp this morning.

Ds has a bit of a sore bum, his mouth seems ok but I will ask them to check it. Hopefully they'll treat us both to nip it in the bud.

CherrySherbert how horrendous for you. I will ask, but even if they don't, will be on guard to return if thrush treatment doesn't eliminate the pain.

Am so relieved it's nothing serious! Thanks again Flowers
