How long did you breastfeed for?

Just that really, some people say to do it for 6 months then wean and some say 2 years, so I'm wondering what the average was and when most people found it "normal" to stop feeding and start the weaning process?

I want to BF for as long as possible but have no clue what's considered a normal amount of time to do it for!

19 months with my first, he stopped a week before my second was born. Currently bf him at 3 months.

I've been pregnant and/or breastfeeding since 2011! I weaned DD1 at 2.9 years as I was pregnant, exhausted and getting an increasingly worse aversion. Dd2 is still going at 23 months. I've recently started night weaning her but will carry on day feeds for a while longer if she wants to.

Currently nursing a 5 month old and a 4 yr old. Planning on natural term weaning

Llamacorn · 25/05/2017 22:33

Dd1 was 14 months
Dd2 was 13 months
Dd3 was 9 months, really gutted though as she would NOT take milk or water from a cup or bottle at all before then, and I had an overnight hospital stay where she protested so long she eventually took bottles, but then wouldn't go back on the breast! I continued expressing for a couple more months though.

Altogether...seven years on an ongoing basis (no pauses....just kept going) with four children, with two overlapping.

25, though that was more DS's choice than mine - he just didn't want to give up! Even now he sticks his hand in my top for comfort.

SansaryaAgain · 25/05/2017 22:37

Eek, 2.5!!! Otherwise it would be shades of Little Britain and "bitty"

Argeles · 25/05/2017 22:37

28 months and counting.

Killdora · 25/05/2017 22:38

I stopped at twelve months with dd because I thought I was 'supposed' to.

Still bf ds at 14 months, I plan to continue to at least two years (who guidelines now) and just see where it goes from there.

He loves it bless him.

BroomstickOfLove · 25/05/2017 22:38

The official advice is for "exclusive" breastfeeding for 6 months (i.e. nothing but breastmilk - no food, no formula, no other drinks) and then to carry on breastfeeding along other food and drink until the baby is at least two.

But the number of people who do that in the UK are vanishingly small.

teenybean · 26/05/2017 00:42

MrsLucyEmerson · 26/05/2017 05:19

DC1 to 13 months (as I was then pg with DC2 and yes I know you can be while pg but I was too exhausted with a miscarriage and then a pregnancy to continue)

DC 2 to 2 years.

Fond memories.

Rockspin · 26/05/2017 05:24

2.5 years with DD1, and so far 6 days with DD2 but hoping for similar length of time as she's taken to it well Grin

PolkaDotFlamingo · 26/05/2017 05:50

I'm feeding a 26 month old and now pregnant with #2.

icklekid · 26/05/2017 05:55

Ds was for 4 months until he went through nursing
Dd still going at 10 months but she also has formula when I'm at work

Dothbutternoparsnips · 26/05/2017 06:01

4 months and 10 months

DarkFloodRises · 26/05/2017 06:12

DC1 12m
DC2 11m
DC3 8m

badhotfanny · 26/05/2017 06:56

Both kids 14 months.

DD1 she self weaned: DD2 I went on a city break abroad for a friend's wedding when she was the same age and it seemed fair and I couldn't be bothered to express while away. I'm happy with that.

Wait4nothing · 26/05/2017 07:04

Just wanted to add a tiny one - 3 days.
I struggled a lot and didn't have a lot of support. My intention was to ebf for as long as possible. Just putting it on here incase anyone is reading and feeling guilty - I definitely tried my best and my daughter is fed and fine now.
