poll: how long per feed did your 5 month old bf for?

my ds is feeding 30 mins at 7 am, drinks 9 oz expressed milk at 11, 6 oz of expressed milk at 2.30, then has 40 mins bf at 6.30 pm and another 30 mins at 11 pm (these times are as long as he wants).

does this sound about normal? He's only just started solids, two teaspoons of rice and pumpkin yesterday..

My ds was exclusively b/fed at that age (as he was refusing the bottle) and he used to feed for 5-10 mins at a time. I think they're all different.. What flow is the teat on the bottle?? Maybe he's finding b/feeding hard work if the flow on the bottle is fast and that's why he feeds for so long?????

40 min and 30 min seems so long! but babies are all different - my almost 6 month olds maybe feeds for up to 15/20 minutes. She's not yet on solids.

Gemmitygem · 09/03/2007 17:59

hmm, I suspected it was a bit long...

He guzzles the bottle in 10-15 mins, tops..

He only started solids yesterday, only a tiny bit..

think it's a bit of a left-over from his earlier routine where he had 40 mins before bed, I"m so anxious to make sure he's had enough!

oh well, we'll see how he does.. thanks!

At 5 months my DD would normally take about 45 minutes. At 5 months my DS was about 10 minutes. HTH.

clairemow · 09/03/2007 18:06

gemmity, that sounds almost exactly what my DS1 used to do, except he was prob 20 mins odd at 7am. He always fed for a good 45 mins before bed, I think my supply was slower then. And just before he started solids, he started taking over an hour at bedtime!

Don't compare to other people if you can help it - all babies are different as hana said, and your baby will feed for as long as he needs to.

Gemmity,
dd (4 months) has just recently started feeding for 10-15mins during the day (was 30mins+) but before bed is still a longer feed. Also she feeds every 3 hours during the day, so maybe this makes a difference too.

Hi, as has been said all our babies feed in such different ways. My DS1 used to feed for upto 40mins at a time, I just used to let him have as long as he wanted. He enjoys snuggling, dozing and feeding and is very gentle in his feeding habits. However my darling DS2 is quite aggressive and really feeds quickly 5-10 mins and my breasts are all saggy and he is burping happily, no cuddle and dozing with him, he practically throws himself off my lap to get on with more interesting things! They are all such different characters and there is no 'normal' as such. Our B/F experiences are as different as all our pregnancy and labour stories. As long as you both are happy and hes putting on weight and doing well, then your doing a fab job.
