Medela shields- what size to go for??

Hi all, I think I will need to use these for breast feeding as I have completely inverted nipples but I don't know what size to buy. Last time I think I bought large as I have large breasts (G cup before milk coming in) but my baby was tiny so they seemed huge for him! Milk supply never came in properly but that was due to a few factors so keen to try again this time. Do I go by breast size? I can't go by 'nipples size' as they don't come out!!

Panda I'd give one of the Bfing Helplines a call. They might be able to advise you and can talk through your previous experience with you and give you some support this time.

Congratulations Smilen

I use the boots ones that are one size, theyve been fine from birth and still using them at 5 months

I used the Medela shields in the size medium from when my DD was around a week old and they seemed big for her. When a breast feeding counsellor camemto see me she said they seemed to big and gave me some small ones to try and she has been getting on much better with them. I was told that you need to go by how big they are compared to your baby's mouth.

Thanks for your responses, most helpful! Jilted, I have already spoken to on BF specialist and am going to see another at the hospital this week for advice. Starlight, I think I had large and he struggled with them so that is good to know, maybe smaller ones are better...and Knitted, I saw the boots ones and almost got them but read quite a few reviews about how good the medela ones are...

I swore by avent shields with all 3 of mine- they allow more skin contact a believe. Hope all goes well x

The breastfeeding counsellors in this area recommend the medela ones and advised not to get the Boots ones although she didn't say why.
I just ordered another set so we have more than one pair.

I've been using the medela ones, I've tried all three sizes. As I understand it it's the diameter of your nipple. The small ones are really small and chaffed my nipple on the inside! ow! The medium ones are just right and teh big ones meant he had to do extra sucking but he didn't care. I still use those if my nipples are sore for any reason.

I'd get out the ruler and have a measure!

Thanks all :) I went and had a meeting with the breast feeding specialist at my hospital and she said I should avoid the shields as they won't really help me but has suggested I start expressing before bubba arrives so that is what I am.doong. Thank you for taking time to respond x
