Mum's weightloss while bfing

I am a bit worried about my weight. I have always been slim and only put on a stone while pg and lost this almost immediately. 7 months on and am now less than I was before pregnancy and struggling to keep my weight up. I know some of you will think 'lucky her' but really being underweight - which i am - is not much fun.

I am assuming it is the bfing as otherwise seem OK and I eat normally, infact I eat whatever I want as need the calories! Anyone else struggled to keep up with their LO's demands - feel she is thriving and I am wasting away!

I lost weight quickly when bfding (unfortunately put it back on after )

I think you need to work on a diet plan - not to lose weight but to bulk up.

Although I usually struggle to lose weight, dp has always struggled to keep weight on and I wouldn't swop places. I least I don't have to worry if I am ill.

Have you spoken to your HV or gp and see if they can give you any ideas on how to put weight on?

With dp (who has finally managed to get up to a reasonably weight) we found eating a healthy diet helped him (but he did eat complete crap before). Also eating 5 smaller meals a day rather than 2 or 3 main meals.

I know others who have used bulk up drinks, but that usually has been when their weight has got seriously low.

i lost weight while breast feeding my first. once i stopped breast feeding exclusively 6 months i started to put some back on. but overall i dropped a size in clothes from pre pregnacy to post bf.

I have been skinnier since ds was born, especially after I stopped bf. I think it's all the stress of dealing with a baby, tbh... I sympathise with you as other people probably think it's great to have lost weight, but I just feel scrawny most of the time... A doctor once said to me that a mother should eat every time the baby feeds. Thought it sounded crazy, but can now see some sense in it, particularly if you're bf...

another one here who has trouble keeping weight on.

When I bf the weight literally fell off me until I went down to just under 6 stone . I only bf DS1 for 10 days and in those 10 days I lost 1 1/2 stone . Was struggling with bf anyway so for various reasons decided to stop.

Over about 2 months I slowly managed to regain the weight.

Have no advice, sorry. Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone.

Mycupoverrunswithlove · 14/02/2007 17:57

It was the same for me, when bf my ds1 I went from a dress size of 16 down to a 10, then when I bf the twins, I got really quite emaciated. Hollow cheeks, scrawny arm, and boney.
Did get my thyroid checked, but it was just the bfing.
I am now a size 12 and can see that I will slowly put it back on if I am not careful. I am thinking of dieting as it would be a shame to put it all back on.
I have got into some bad eating habbits, as for years I have been able to stuff my face with impunity
I guess we are just lucky, but it is worrying as well. At my thinnest, every one was concerned, and I looked too gaunt really

Thanks - glad to know I'm not alone. I think I will see gp just for advice. I eat well I think but as I'm a healthy eater and vegetarian, there isn't much chance for big calorie blow outs. Maybe a bottle of guiness a day would do it!

It is really strange isn't it,

I too ended up weighing over a stone less than my prepregnancy weight and people used to say to me.. "where do you put your food?"

I would have porridge and toast for b'fast, then 2 sandwiches and possibly a cake for lunch, constant fruit snacks then a LARGE meal at night and more often than not some more biscuits later on... I was actually eating about twice the amount of DH and still losing weight.

This time i have put on around 2.5stones and im looking forward to BFing so much to loose the weight again.. just hope it is the same as last time

cruisemum1 · 15/02/2007 13:17

me too! I was 8st 11lb before pregnancy and now ds is 23 weeks I am down to 8st 2lb. tbh I don't like the way I look now. My body looks fine but my face looks scrawny. I am eating loads (including chocs, biscuits etc. ) but still the weight is dropping off me. Makes me cross when people say "Oh you want to be careful, you are getting thin". It's as though I am doing in on purpose!!!!

Some women do loose weight when bf, and for those, I suppose eating more protein rich, hich calorific food that others got to avoid could make a difference!
However, pg can mess about with your body, and especially thyroid probs aren't uncommon...a friend of mine lost loads of weight after her pg and in the end they found out it was a thyroid problem....so, mihgt be worth having your bloods taken, just incase!
