Baby clamping down

My almost 5 month old is clamping down so hard with her gums that I am yelping in pain/grunting through gritted teeth till I can get her mouth open. I'm a dedicated breast feeder but this is unbearable. Anyone have any ideas or experience?

Mine went through a phase of this when she was 3 months. I was given the advice to remove her from the boob each time and make her latch back on properly. I was told she'd learn not to do it because it would annoy her to be removed etc.

She definitely stopped doing it quite quickly after that. But it could just have been a phase she moved on from!
