Electric Breastpump users: Which one is best and why?

Am considering buying VS hiring and wondered what your opinions were?

make sure you don't get one that's too noisy. Some of them are unreal!

did you use this one for all feeds or for some of the feeds?

when did you start using it? i.e. before or after milk supply was established?

i didn't start expressing for about 4 weeks and at first used the avent hand pump. got fed up with it after a few weeks and switched to this. i used to express about once a day at first, by about 5 months she was having almost all expressed milk. stopped bf at 6 months.

i had a tommy tippe hand pump tp start with , didnt get on with it al all so now have this one medela mini pump i was amazed the first time i used it. (still am) it is battery or electric plug in which is good as i have to take it work with me to use in my lunch breaks.

my health visitor said they were expensive to hire (around £1.50 a day) and also no where local to me hired them anyway.

i express first thing in moring and at lunch when at work (work 3 day). too painfull if i dont. ds2 is 7 months and as much as i would now like to stop bf i cant as he is allergic to formula and so i have to keep expressing for him at nursery.

I used the Ameda Lactaline for a year as I exclusively expressed for dd1. It's a double pump - v quiet (much quieter & more solid in my opinion than the Medela Mini Electric). Cost around £75 but you can pick them up much cheaper on ebay second hand. Would highly recommend.

I need something which will run about 12 times daily for the first six weeks (make that 24 times daily if it isn't a double pump).

Not stressed about noise but it must be hardworking because it will get a lot of use .

In the absence of any other recommendations - I'll look in to the Medela Hospital Grade rental and the Ameda Lactaline.

My Lactaline really took a battering & buying it worked out cheaper than hiring one. If you do buy one, their customer service is fantastic. After 8 months the motor started making a funny noise - was still working fine. I phoned them & they arranged for a new motor to be sent by courier which arrived the next day.

I also had an Ameda hand pump which was useful when I went on a hen weekend & on holidays when out & about.

Thank you - I think I will buy one in the UK and have my mother send it out as they are not readily available in South Africa.

dejags - sorry to hijack this thread but just noticed thant you were back from travelling and are pregnant again - congrats. I think we chatted a bit when I was pregnant but I lost track of your travels after I popped in March. Is your blog still accessible as would love to catch up on how you went on. If so can you post a link please? Where are you based now then?

Another vote for the ameda lactaline here I found it to be really quiet and effective. Double pumping was a dream as It meant not spending so much time hooked up iyswim. Mine was £80 in postage.

Yes I a pregnant - got the shock of our lives when we arrived in Thailand (in September last year) to find out that we were expecting no. 3. Am now 23 weeks and expecting a little girl .

The blog got all mucked up when the hosting outfit lost some of the posts. In a nutshell we did the following:

Travelled 1st May - 1st November
6 weeks in the USA in an RV - NYC to LA via Memphis (the BEST thing I have ever done in my life)

Then a heavenly two week break in Fiji

Then 3 months in NZ and Australia - fabulous but we were very tired by the time we were done.

4 weeks in China - HIDEOUSLY HARD - we think the wee girl was conceived somewhere between Beijing and X'ian - so it wasn't all bad

7 weeks in SE Asia (Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia) - by this time I was puking my guts up all day every day - Malaysia and Cambodia are just a blur. I cried with relief when I got back onto British soil and didn't have to put up with the funny "smells" anymore.

We are now living in South Africa. We were due to emigrate to Aus last week but have had to postpone because of the baby.

the trip sounds great - am very jealous,but couldn't imagine travelling with morning sickness - foreign toilets would have done me in!

we are currently taken up with renting our house out and buying a 1930s semi to renovate so our travel plans are on hold. We were meant to be going out to family in Cambodia but never mind. If we have a sudden windfall we may head to the states in autumn but in reality we will have to make do with family weddings in Cardiff and on top of a mountain in Scotland! We are also determined to try out our tent this year.....

Good luck with the birth - are you going to stay in SA then? Whereabouts are you? We loved our time there and were tempted to buy a smallholding and stay.....

I have an AmedA pURELY yOURS. It's great. I excusively pumped w/ ds1 for a year, no problems. Have used it a couple of times now w/ ds2. Quiet and gets the job done in about 10 min.
