Can I just ask how does a BFC actually work? I know the NCT run a hotline for b/f problems, but do counsellors also visit mums to help? If so are these visits free of charge?

Our branch has a BFC and you can call or visit her for advice
It's free but has to work round her schedule (kids, pt work etc)

Here the NHS also has BFC and you can make an appt to see them at their clinics

NCT breastfeeding counsellors work on a voluntary basis so yes, any visits are free of charge.

Whether your local bfc makes home visits depends on her and her family circumstances eg she may have young children and no childcare or may not drive etc.

Some just do telephone advice, some run drop in sessions, some teach in antenatal classes (they do get paid for this) and others make home visits)
