Nursing newborn

Gave birth to my son on 13/3. This is my first baby everything completely new. Still in the ward. He didn't eat much last night due to bringing up the mucus due to emcs. Baby has been cluster feeding since about 4pm today, rooting around anytime off the Breast. I was letting him sleep/eat at the same time but I've been told to try and wake him up so its a consistent feed which I've been doing. He's still hungry! Am I doing anything wrong or will he sleep at some point

you are doing nothing wrong- he's using his instincts to help your breasts produce milk for him. Keep at it. After he comes off, wipe some breast milk around your nipples and areola to prevent chaffing. If he's been feeding for a while let him sleep on the breast for a while.

Cluster feeding is totally normal and my advice is to carry on with what you are doing. If baby wants to be on the breast just let him be. I'm sure the suckling is good for your supply. Remember it's not just food it's comforting for your baby too.

Would love to tell you he'll sleep soon but my DS2 was attached all night for the first night and pretty much for all of his first week! Many babies do not like to be put down to sleep and will only sleep while held. Exhausting at the beginning so do anything to get a few hours in. DP used to take DS2 downstairs at 6am and I slept till 7 am. That one interrupted hour was bliss.

You're not doing anything wrong, just follow your baby's needs. Let him spend as much time on the breast as he wants. When you get home put your feet up, get drinks and snacks and some good box sets and enjoy the time with your baby. They are small for such a short time, do not put pressure on yourself to do anything other than take care of yourself and your DS. The first weeks are wonderful and exhausting all at the same time.
I would also say that while I'm sure the midwives and HV have good intentions they can make you doubt yourself but you know your baby best. My HV asked me if 5 day old DS was going 3 hours between feeds, truth was he couldn't be off the breast for more than 10 mins without crying! I just smiled and nodded.

This is why I love mumsnet. I finally got him to sleep in the cot..... And then he pooed I'm sure it was on purpose lol. When I'm with my dh he helps me get the perfect latch position. In not so good on my own. Last night We ended up sleeping with him in my arms, but I know they discourage that. And my arms! I will be like hulk hogan once this child is grown

Have always co slept with DS2 but know others who aren't keen and have taken shifts holding baby while the other sleeps. Whatever gets you all the most sleep!
I've never got DS2 to sleep in his cot and he's 6 months!

Well he finally went down for a good hour after a feed. He's just woke up and nursing again but at least he's had a sleep. Here's hoping he conks out again after this one
