Parents with babies on nutramigen or neocate and going on holiday??

Hi all

What do parents with little ones on special formula do if going abroad?

Our DD would be 4.5 or 5.5 months when we are thinking about going to Spain but just not sure what to do about bottles....ie cleaning, sterilising etc as nutramigen isnt available in ready made bottles.

I dont fancy taking a steriliser in my suitcase.

What have others done? Or do we give the holiday a miss for this year?

You can get travel sterilisers that use water and sterilising tablets or you can get travel electric ones that are more compact than full sized ones. You would take powdered milk with you and make them up using boiled bottled water with the lowest sodium content you can find.

There are microwave steriliser bags in Boots if you will have a microwave where you'll be staying? You can use each bag twenty times and there are five in a box.

You might need to check with your airline about weight allowance for medical supplies for your powder.

Good luck, we just didn't go abroad as I couldn't face the hassle of specialist formula and finding food free of multiple allergens.

A packet of Milton tablets and a big Tupperware or similar worked for us abroad.

My only advice is to take spare tins of nutramigen. I would roughly double what you think you need in the hold luggage. We had no questions asked about our stash, but I took her paper prescription in case anyone queried it. Getting hold of an extra tin if your flight is delayed/cancelled, luggage is lost, or you drop an open tin on the floor would not have a great effect on your peace of mind or holiday!

On the plane I took a thermos (empty) and decanted some formula powder into a separate container. Got one of the coffee chains to give me some hot water after the security checks and used that to make up bottles, though I did try to time her feeds so she had one before the flight and had some snacks to keep her going whilst on the plane (she was older than 6 months when we flew so had the luxury of finger foods).

Would waiting until weaning has started be an idea? Then you are not relying solely on bottles?
