DD is now 6 wks old and usually poos after every feed. She has one bottle of formula at night, which we started when I was getting terrible migraines. This didn't affect her poos. But since Boxing day she hasn't poo'd and she is screaming for 2-3 hours at a time and straining but all we get are smears in her nappy.
i am massaging her tummy as suggested in another thread and I have been trying to give her cooled boiled water but nothing has happened and she is really upset. She is bf ok and has times where she is settled
The hv suggested diluted apple juice and the baby whisperer book suggests diluted prune juice
Not sure what to do

your baby is too young for any juices. hv and baby whisperer are both barmy and shockingly out of date. sorry, i don't have any new answers. i would say stop giving your baby formula and bf exclusively. Bm only will soften up her poos as you know nothing else is like bm poos. take her to bed with you for at least part the night and feed lying down. you will learn how to do it effectively after a few goes so that you both get more sleep in not too long a time.

Don't wait too long - your GP can give you a suppository to help though it's usually last result. I had to do this with my bf dd quite early on too.

What did work, cooled but body temp water with dark brown sugar. Worked like a charm.

My bf dd went through phases of being slightly constipated for a few days.
I continued bf as usual and, trust me on this, the blockage cleared with a vengeance!!!!
I would persevere with bf/ff as much as you want to keep the fluid intake up.
If you are still worried, contact GP/HV/local pharmacist for further advice.
My feeling is that it will clear of it's own accord and I hope it does soon
