I'm looking for information about which formula to choose. Any recommendations or are they all pretty similar?

We used SMA Gold for our 3 DCs, for no other reason than that's what the hospital gave me when the first was born.

In the UK, formula all has to be made according to statutory requirements, and there are very few differences. Have you had a chance to ask the midwife or HV about this?

Advice I was given was to pick the one the local 24 hour shop sells, just in case! As PP says, they are all much of a muchness though some babies prefer some to others.

My HV told me all formulas were the same but they're not.

We were SMA gold as that's just what DH picked up in case we needed some. At around 3 months we got the above advice from an HV at weigh in clinic so we switched to Cow and Gate as it was cheaper. On SMA DD would poo once a day or every other day, on cow and gate we were on 5 explosive poos a day. We switched back.

They do differ slightly - and these slight differences may affect some babies. However, it's unpredictable! A good overview, independent and scientific, is here:

I always thought they were the same but ds2 reacted really badly to SMA.

Ds1 had SMA with no problems.

Ds2 had SMA after being breastfed at first. He immediately got spotty, miserable, had horrible smelly green poos. I stuck with it for one month because I was scared to change it. Eventually changed to Aptimal and he was a different baby, his skin looked immediately better, he was happier and his poos went back to yellow and sweet smelling. It did however upset his tummy for about a week Sad

Not much help but point being they can affect babies differently.

My DS is on Aptamil as are almost all formula fed babies I know! I have no idea why, in our case it was just the first one I picked. We've never had any issues with it but it's not the cheapest.

NickyEds · 05/02/2016 21:24

They're all much of a muchness so I'd go with the cheapest because, well why wouldn't you try the cheapest first?!! Or the one that they sell at your local shop so that you're never caught out. Don't stock pile though just in case one disagrees with your baby for whatever reason. I've mix fed both of mine with bm and SMA. I chose SMA because it was the one my sister used Hmm!!

unimaginativename13 · 06/02/2016 20:20

We use Aptamil because it's the starter kit we got at Mothercare. Also made sure it was a brand we could order on line at Ocado and buy in our local Co-Op.

You have to start somewhere! So just pick one!

unimaginativename13 · 06/02/2016 20:21

Agree don't stockpile .....we only have the one we are using then one in the cupboard, plus a few ready mades for going out.

Has anyone had any problems on hipp?
Dd was having aptamil - only about 100mls a day and the rest breast milk but it seemed to make her windy.
Tried her in hipp organic today - just 100mls - and she seems worse. But only whilst feeding. She cries, takes the bottle and then draws her legs up and screams and spits the bottle out even though she's hungry.

Maybe she isn't hungry? Are you certain it's not just she has had enough?
