I am breast feeding for the first time. My lo is 5 days old and my milk has come in. I have really hard painful lumps under both my arms and sometimes in other places on the breasts - is this normal and if not what should I do?

My breasts were lumpy to start with. Warm Bath/shower a day warm flannels on them helps, as does massaging them gently.

Keep feeding on demand. When your baby is feeding, massage the lumps in the direction of the nipple.

They should go away in a day or two, but keep an eye out for any obvious redness on the site of the pain and for any feverish symptoms as now is prime mastitis time too.

Good luck and well done. The next few days/weeks will be the hardest, it gets a lot, lot easier thereafter.

It seems perfectly normal to me Smile I've breastfed two children now and have had lumpy bits when my milk first came in both times, and indeed whenever my breasts got particularly full in the many months afterwards.

I tend to give DS a feed when they go lumpy and I can physically feel them soften after a few minutes.
