Abnormal nipple pain

Yesterday morning I experienced painful twinges in my left nipple but it didn't last very long so U thought nothing of it.
However at 6pm it was a whole different story. It was a bit uncomfortable during the feed but nothing major not until afterwards when the pain was awful. I could see nothing on my nipple atall. It feels like a long needle was being inserted right through my nipple and the pain was spasmodic. The areola has been a bit itchy but thats a problem more on the other side.
The only way I could relieve this pain was by roughly massaging the nipple. I tried expressing to see if that would help but it only made it worse.
In the end I took paracetamol (and have done 4 hourly) as I was so afraid it would come back during the night feed.
Have spoken to the HV this morning and the suggestion is it's thrush. However there is no evidence of this in my other breast or in dd's mouth.
Any ideas anyone? TIA

Have you tried the nct bf line?

MrsDoolittle · 17/05/2004 10:51

as one who has had it - try thrush as a possibility - don't be fobbed off if your doc can't see it either - we didn't present with 'normal' symptoms but it made our life hell for a few weeks until we got treated - the pain sounds similar

Mrs Doolittle
You have described my pain to a tee and it takes my breath away. Have just recovered from v nasty mastitis infection too so things in the bf dept aren't great but we just keep perservering and taking the painkillers. GP said it was just healing pain???? I can't say I'm happy with that diagnosis but if no improvement soon will be forced to go back. Feel like I have shares in the surgery as I've been there so often recently!

Funny thing happened with this one.... I fed dd of that breast the next day VERY tentatively and you know what?...... Nothing, absolutely diddley squat!!! I have no idea what it was, but the relief that it was gone was tremendous.
I can only assume it was a blocked duct.
Very bizarre!!! I wouldn't recommend it

Does anyone know anything more about the thrush thing? Am now feeling this sharp pain on both sides, usually after feeds and baby is struggling with feeding. All signs of the mastitis have gone but this spasmodic sharp pain remains and I'm at the end of my rope about it. Have only just discovered this site (in trying to find out about thrush) but hate going to GP as always feel I'm making a lot of fuss over nothing! It hurts but isn't constant so when it's not there I wonder if I'm imagining it! (You know, the new(ish) baby, other kids, no sleep, etc, etc thing)!!! When you have pain in the breast it affects you in the head and I find myself with a short fuse with things that normally wouldn't bother me. Any suggestions or am I really just mad?!
