Period cycles after whilst bf

Hello

Had my first period beginning of last month. DD2 is 7mths and I breast feed her but she is also on solids and has been for awhile - guess thats why my periods came back.

About a week before it started I was so pale, felt awful and had cramps, when it came it was so heavy went through clothes at night and lasted 7 days. I got it 6th Novemeber. Just checked the calender today was saw it was 34 since my first period. Is this normal? I dont feel like I am going to get them and I feel fine. Before my first baby my period was every 28 days and after I breastfed dd1. Could i go a couple of months without a period and could they be all irregular because I am still breastfeeding. With dd1 my period only started when I stopped.

I just dont feel premenstral at all. Could they have stopped and return at a later date? I hope so or when bf are they irregular for while?

I think it sometimes takes a while to get a regular cycle back. Btw I have just had my 1st period since having dd2 (she is 17m and still bf) and I felt AWFUL for about 2 weeks before (lots of aches and exhaustion) and it was v. heavy.

DontlookatmeImshy · 09/12/2006 22:18

I think it'sone of those things that's different for everybody. When mine first came backI was hoping it was a one off and the bf'ing would keepthem away but no such luck.

I've had worse pms since mine restarted, they are extremely heavy, and last ages but had none of the horrible cramps. But they are also alot more regular. However 5 months later (& still bf'ing) they are slowly started to settle down back to how they were before.

Your post reminded me that my period is due tomorrow. Will be my third one since ds's birth 9 months ago (still bfing). I too used to have a 28 day cycle but judging by the last couple of cycles it's changed to 35 (and no signs tonight, so have a feeling this month will be longer). I think they tend to be irregular and longer while stil bfing.

TooTickyDoves - wow 17mths!!! Lucky you, you must of felt like you were dying when they started.

I think I was so shockec to see the blood and thought I was bleeding to death

I was hoping that other bfeeders would say that when theirs started, they would only have the odd period.

Its just that last month I felt sooooooooo awful before they started and this month I feel normal and there are no signs they are on their way.

Other thought is that even though we have been careful I could be pregnant - now that would be a big xmas suprise for dh!

Im sure im not though. Although that would mean no periods again for awhile

Percypig

Thank you - i was hoping someone would day that.

I guess i've only had one so it must take a few months for your cycles to settle.

Yeah I thought I could be pregnant too...felt funny on Thurs and tested in secret! Wasn't really surprised it was negative though so will just have to wait and hope this cycle isn't too long, otherwise I'll be spending a fortune on tests before we even begin ttc after Christmas!

CranberryJelley · 09/12/2006 22:39

I had one when dd1 was almost 6 months, then asked the exact same question to my hv, and was told it was normal to be irregular...at 8 months I finally realised I was pregnant with dd2

DS is 9 months and I'm currently experiencing my first periond since his birth, and it is the heaviest/longest I've ever had....is it related to the long gap, I wonder?

percypig · 09/12/2006 22:43

Cranberryjelly you've made me want to test again!!! tell me to be sensible, would actually quite like to be pregnant though hadn't planned on quite so soon and it might wreck holiday plans

CranberryJelley · 09/12/2006 22:51

Sorry percypig.

lovecloud · 12/12/2006 22:45

Lovecloud, they can be all over the place to start with. Mine came back when DD was 14 weeks and then disappeared again until last week (she is now nearly 6 months) so not at all regular, and this seems to be normal. I have seen a study which says that the earlier periods return after birth, the less likely they are to be regular. I guess they will all sort themselves out in a few months.
