BF and weaning?

When my LO is 6 months will be going to nursery. As she totally refuses a bottle and formula I doubt she will have either at nursery and so have resigned myself to continue bfing. i know the guidelines say for bottle fed babies up to 12 months still need around a pint of milk a day. How many bfs might that be>

If she won't take a bottle at nursery I know I can get them to try a cup but was thinking a bf at morning and one on return might be enough? I don't want her waking in the night for lots of feeds when I am back at work!

I can't express very much at all so wouldn't be able to get enough for even one bottle a day at nursery.

Any idea? Thanks

I was really worried about this. My son did take a bottle now and again, but seemed to feed better from me. This eventually stopped when he was 4 months old as he started waking every 1 - 2 hours during the night to feed. I refused to feed him myself. Instead I just kept giving him a bottle. I tried lots of different bottles and he prefers the MAM bottles with the teats that are meant to be like breastfeeding. Also, changed the formula to Aptimal. I was using SMA but he did not seem to like it. I would say that it took about 24 hours for him to take more from a bottle.

Same predicament as you - but my dd2 is older. I go back to work in Jan when dd2 is 11 months. I'm intending to just feed her first and last thing - and hopefully she will be having water/cows milk during the day - at least she happily drinks water out of a cup.

Dd2 usually sleeps through but tbh I have resigned myself to the fact that I might have to do some night feedings.

Does your lo drink out of a cup? If so it might be worthwhile getting them used to drinking bm/formula out of a cup. My gut feeling is that 2 feeds a day won't be enough for a 6 month old - I would think they would need at least another 2?

Hopefully, someone will come along to give you better advice. Have you tried one of the bf helplines like La Leche or NCT for advice?

I never 'intended' to bf this long - not sure if I have made a rod for my own back in some ways.

I use the MAM teats on avent bottles, coz I had loads and are much cheaper than the MAM bottles. In fact they fit on ANY wide necked bottle.

Well done for bf so far.

I went back to work at 7 months and had a nightmare getting dd onto bottles. She doesn't take much at all but it's still loads more than she would do from a cup. Would guess that 6 months is a little too young to manage on just morning and night bf. Hope this helps.

Exact same predicament. DD is 22 wks and wondering if morn, early eve and night feed would be enough. I have just persevered with closer to nature bottles and she will take couple of oz of SMA now. But hoping she will take more when she realises I am not around next week and she cant get any BF from her dad. Good Luck with your little one.

Thanks for your replies.

The reason I though 2 or 3 feeds is that nhs guidelines say weaning babies only need aroun 1 pt milk which is only 3 bottles apx. So it can't be many bfs in equivalent .

She will use a cup but doesn't like formula and spits it out! I will pack a bottle and milk for nursery and see what happens - maybe that will be a turning point when she realises nothing else available.
