question for those using nipple sheilds

2 weeks in and my nipples are cracked and sore. Working on latch but still painful atm. Trying out nipple shields, with mixed results (sometimes ds decides to try to chomp through them!). But I'm not clear on how to maintain them, the instructions are not clear (or maybe I'm too sleep deprived to understand).
How often do you sterilise them? The instructions say once a day but if I'm using them at every feed I will be using them 8-10 times a day. And I'm supposed to clean them immediately but at night I feed/sleep/feed/sleep etc all in bed. Ds falls asleep on me and there's no way I'm disturbing him to go down and clean the shield, beside which I will need to feed him to sleep again.
Any advice please?

Hope you can get better help with making it comfortable, ICant.

In the meantime, have a few shields on the go so you always have a clean one to hand when you need it. Sterilise and keep in a clean place ( a lidded plastic pot is fine) until you need it. No, it would be mad to disturb your baby to clean the shield, son just put the used one to one side and then use a clean one next time if you can't clean the previous one straight away.

Does this help?

I tried them for a bit unjust use Milton(tablets in water that can be left 24hrs but sterilises in 20 min) and dropped them into the tub between feeds. I didn't worry of they were out for a bit if he was on off feeding for a few hrs.
