Breastfeeding problem 10 weeks old

I am breastfeeding my 10 week old and suddenly I have a problem. He is refusing left breast - used to be his favourite and when I try pumping from this side only a few mls is coming out (maybe 5ml) . I used to get loads from pumping and he used to love feeding from this side so I don't understand what has gone wrong. This is going on about 2 days

Pebble - is it possible you have a blocked duct ? Any heat, tenderness in that area?

deuscat · 04/10/2015 19:03

I was thinking blocked duct. This can reduce the flow and put the boob out of favour. Have you tried breast compressions whilst feeding?

PotteringAlong · 04/10/2015 19:07

Also, dangle feeding (it looks weird but works!). Put your baby on the floor, get on all 4's, dangle your boob in their mouth and feed them at that angle - it will help the duct to clear.

No pain or heat from breast just crying baby. He is very upset I don't really understand what is wrong!

I can get him to feed for a couple of seconds from that side but then pulls off crying

I. Had this Last week, coincidentally also at 10 weeks . My dd wouldn't go near my left breast. I'd had mastitis in that breast a few weeks earlier so was worried it had returned but dd then started feeding from it.

This is probably not the cause if you can't express much either but have you tried all positions? Lying down, rugby hold etc?

PebbleTTC · 04/10/2015 20:23

I tried different positions but he just doesn't want to feed. Could you have blocked duct and have no pain etc? Could it happen that your milk stops?

I had a blocked duct and it looked terrible but didn't hurt at all and milk was still coming out, from the other ducts I guess. Was it really sudden like flowing one day and gone the next ?

Yes, I had wedding Friday and he went ages without feeding so breasts were really full and leaking everywhere then Saturday morning is when all this started. I keep trying him and he is beginning to suck for longer each time but still only seconds rather than 10-15 min like usual. Breasts look and feel normal

Hello again (I posted on your other thread)! How did it go overnight? If you're still having problems, you could try one of the breastfeeding helplines? They could talk it through with you and might have some other suggestions. This is pure speculation, but if it is the side he normally prefers, and you were feeling very full on Saturday, might the letdown have been particularly strong and he maybe decided he'd stick with the side with the slightly weaker letdown while it calmed down? If he is slowly returning to that side then it sounds like you're doing the right things anyway - hope it all resolves soon.

Try having a long bath and giving breasts a good massage. Should sort out any blockages. Maybe try feeding him in the bath all the heat might make milk flow?

PebbleTTC · 05/10/2015 21:06

It got a bit better this morning but same thing happening since afternoon. Will try bath but I don't think there is any blockage

If you want to speak to someone, the NCT phone line is open until midnight and the ABM one until 10.30 (you don't need to be a member). Hopefully he might feed a bit better overnight or in the morning again?
