Mastitis - help!

I started taking antibiotics yesterday afternoon, but my temperature is still 39C (even with paracetamol and ibuprofen).

Feeding as much as possible but when I pump on the affected side I can't get any milk. Usually no problems expressing. Should I keep trying to pump on that side or am I just stimulating more milk production?

Also how long does it usually take for antibiotics to kick in? Is it usual to still feel this rubbish after 24 hours?

Oh it's horrible! are you expressing only? If not is there a suggestion that it's caused by poor latch? How old is little one? I found feeding on affected side was most helpful. Expressing not so much. X

Thank you - DC is 8 weeks. I am feeding too, just trying to express to empty the breast more.

Don't think there is a problem with latch, he has nearly doubled his birth weight (he was born at 37 weeks and was less than 6lbs). and usually feeding is comfortable, but could get it checked. Had mastitis once with DC1 but didn't need antibiotics just massaged and fed out.

Do you have a white spot on your nipple? I did, I ended up rubbing it with a hot flannel - it was some skin which had grown over a duct. Once it went the milk started pouring out.

I went back to the Drs after 24hrs as I honestly felt so bad - there was nothing more they could do. Just rest, drink loads of water and keep taking the tablets.

I started to feel better after 2-3 days and found massaging the breast whilst feeding or expressing helped clear the engorgement/blockage and empty the breast more effectively.
Also using a warm compress before and a cold one after will aid in the reduction of any inflammation.

Thanks all - started to feel much better after 2.5 days of the antibiotics and now more or less back to normal. Blockage still there but going down. Compresses helped a lot, thank you for the tip!
