Question about giving expressed breast milk

If I give DD expressed breast milk from a bottle, if she doesn't finish that bottle, how long does the milk last for? Would the 6 hours at room temperature still stand, or is it like formula where once started, the bottle has to be finished within the hour?

You might find the information you need on the La Leche League website or on Kellymom.

It depends how conservative you are. There is no professional consensus. When my dd was in neonatal intensive care, they re-offered the same bottle for up to six hours at room temperature and then discarded any remaining milk. The unit operated one of the largest milk banks in the country so I think they were probably up-to-date. They acknowledged that they were being quite cautious.

I was very laid back during my several years of exclusively expressing, and never discarded milk until it smelled "off". Which it never did unless a bottle had got lost down the back of the sofa for days or got left in the hot car.

If you are worried about it, store your milk in smaller quantities to reduce waste.
