Celebs and BF Promotion

As a future 'lactation enthusiast' I think it's good that celebs come forward and promote BF.

However, it seems that a BF woman's biggest anxiety (it's certainly mine) is BF in public. Why do we never see our celebs doing this? Surely this is the best advertisement they can do?
Why are their breasts more taboo than ours?

Three ideas:

Maybe they do breastfeed in public but photographers or newspapers think that that is not an image they should either take or publish as it could be read as quite an obvious invasion of privacy.

Maybe they are just surrounded by bodyguards and attendants so no one can get a peak.

Maybe they only have to mention to a restaurant or shop owner that they desire a quite place to breastfeed and they are whisked into some inner sanctum that we will never gain entry to.

I read an OK Magazine interview with Donna Air in the last few months and she was vigorously pro bf. Not what I expected at all, but that's my fault for judging book by cover etc.

aloha · 10/05/2004 20:32

Anna Walker and I once spent a happy twenty minutes breastfeeding our boys together in Peter Jones. Did see a picture of Paula Yates breastfeeding Tiger Lily in the park with vile, critical caption making fun of her once, which I found very upsetting.

Piffleoffagus · 10/05/2004 20:37

I've seen Kate Winslet with her daughter feeding in Regents park before at the zoo, years ago, and Madonna did b/f for a while too!
Bet Gwynnie will be vocal mummy juice enthusiast too.. if she deigns to speak to the "press" ever again.
I think it would be influential actually, for more photos of them to be seen feeding, it would reduce barriers, wrongly or rightly...

hercules · 10/05/2004 20:39

I'm pretty sure Jordan bf for a while.

suzywong · 10/05/2004 20:41

Juliet Stephenson borrowed my mate's breast pump (and never gave it back).

hercules · 10/05/2004 21:00

That baby's a bit old to be feeding

toddlerbob · 10/05/2004 22:12

Lucy Lawless who was Xena Warrior Princess was the poster girl for the NZ Breastfeeding Week a couple of years ago, a bit like the Jerry Hall poster, she looked fabulous. The caption was "my best role ever".

Heathcliffscathy · 10/05/2004 22:28

i love both these pictures...jerry looks fantastic, all ice queen sex on a stick, with a baby at breast...fab. LOVE little one trying to get some milk out of sculpture...who is it?

aelita · 11/05/2004 09:16

Read an interview recently with Trinny of Trinny and Susannah - there was a description of her 'plopping' (I believe the phrase was)her baby on her breast mid photo-shoot - no pics published though!

aloha · 11/05/2004 10:11

Cindy Crawford breastfed and talked about it a lot as did Claudia Schiffer. I'm not sure I wouldn't be a bit more shy about breastfeeding if I thought a swarm of paparazzi would be all over me the minute I did! So I think they probably do go somewhere quiet. And yes, it would be an invasion of privacy I think to have photographers in their face while trying to feed the baby.

aloha · 11/05/2004 11:01

Oh, and Elle Macpherson - of the nursing bra fame!

Codswallop · 11/05/2004 11:02

didnt posh promote it?

Piffleoffagus · 11/05/2004 11:05

herc LOL my son was twice the size of that lad when he stopped! Quie possibly the largest 16 mth old ever!

Codswallop · 11/05/2004 11:05

here

Piffleoffagus · 11/05/2004 11:06

posh... did she breastfeed? Kept that quiet,, you would have thought it would have been a good retort to the "you had your baby by c section to fit in with football season"... she can certainly plug a point she likes...
Hmmmm

hercules · 11/05/2004 12:47

Kiwi- my ds was 4 times that size - stopped at 4 years.

suew, i hope she didn't get away with saying it was 'as good as' breastmilk

aloha · 11/05/2004 18:49

I see another health professional giving rubbish advice about breastfeeding in that link - all about having to eat a specially healthy diet etc. It's cr*p.
In her autobiography Posh said that Brooklyn was milk allergic and had to have Neocate or the other one because he couldn't tolerate breastmilk or formula.

tiktok · 11/05/2004 20:28

Yep, aloha - bf mums have to be wary of eating curry, apparently.

I know some people feel this makes a difference to their individual baby, but for a midwife to say it applies to everyone makes me despair.

Anyone know Lesley MacFadyean, Scottish midwife? Can they tell her what's what?

tiktok · 11/05/2004 20:30

Oh, God, she also thinks bf helps pull your tummy muscles in more quickly.....

I am now prepared to assume the Daily Record misquoted her.

No midwife would confuse the effect of oxytocin on the uterus with some spurious effect on the tummy muscles, surely....

Tissy · 11/05/2004 20:31

hope it's not mears
