hello, my ds is 5 weeks old today and i am struggling with feeding. Really want him to have breast milk but feel my boobs are failing me!
After abouta week i had really traumatised nipples (the worst the mw had ever seen!!) I started expressing and then got mastitis. GP and MW recommended antibiotics so took them and then got thrush which is now in my nipples. Carried on expressig which was going really wel and got a bit of a stockpile in fridge, baby taking about 4oz every 2/3 hours, but then On monday went to bfc and latched ds on despite soreness due to thrush. I then breastfed direct tentatively for 4 or 5 intermittent feeds during next couple of days while pumping aswell. Now my right breast seems to be really struggling and only producing about a third of left when i express. This means that i am hardly producing enough to keep ds happy. Am breastfeeding every so often but still not really confident with latch and really don't want to damage nipples again. Also after last express parts of nipple look black and bruised. Am feeling desperate as i really want him to have breast but am worried that soon there wil not be a bottle of Expressed milk and my nipples will be too damaged to feed direct. It feels like it will be a long weekend without BFC. Any ideas?

Poor you - it is a horrible stage. I know some bf counsellors frown on them, but a friend with the same struggles tried nipple shields and swore they were a life saver. Good luck!
