Maybe Modern Formula Isn't so Bad!

Just got off the phone with my MIL who was telling me stories of DH as a baby (back in the late 60's).

He wasn't feeding to well on half milk/half cream so the HV suggested a switch to FULL CREAM with some sort of liquid glucose (?) supplement.

Apparently formula was available in the big cities, but since they were dairy farmers, DH was expected to make do with dregs from the morning milking session!

Fortunately she then said that she hoped I was going to try breast milk cos it's better at helping the baby 'fight germs'

Crikey, how times have changed!

Wow. And presumably your dh is OK? Just goes to show... Makes me wonder what was in formula when I was a baby - certainly didn't have all these prebiotics and the other stuff they boast about. No wonder I'm a hypochrondriac!
MInd you, having grown up drinking green top unpasteurised milk (from local farms) think there's probably more goodness in it straight from the cow than all this pasteurised stuff that travels miles to get in the shop.

my granny once told me she used to put a whisked whole egg RAW in all of her 4 childrens last bottle of the day!!

When I had ds1, in 1975, you could still buy NDM - National Dried Milk - which was a cheap formula sold by the govt. It was later taken off the market due to the high amount of salt in it, which had caused kidney failure in a number of babies. Luckily, I used a branded formula for ds1 but the NDM tragedy made me even more determined to bfeed any further children.

I was fed "Carnation Milk" watered down from birth!!!

Incredible - and my mum wonders why I've got such a sweet tooth

Maisystar, my mother used to make us 'egg flip' ? a milkshake with raw egg. Not when we were babies, though.
Looking at this thread it's a wonder we all survived!

Countess!

Funnily enough, I can't bear the stuff now - not even the smell. In fact, don't drink any milk at all other than a "dash" in my tea
